So I changed my oil today and noticed some very fine metal shavings (like dust) on my drain plug. I have one of those magnetic plugs and it seems to work as advertized... out of curiosity I cut the old oil filter and removed the paper element and took a magnet to it to see if there were any more metal shavings in there.... didn't pick up anything....

It's the 5th oil change on this 383, 1800miles on the engine.... is it normal that I still have some fine shavings on the plug ?? And what the heck is this stuff ?? I have a roller cam so it's not a lobe ... :clobbered:

Been using magnetic plugs for over 35 years.
You will get the most metal dust new, but it will never, never disappear.

The early VW bugs just had a very course screen and a magnetic plug.

Glad to see you change filters often.

ANY overall clue as to what it is FROM???

I see the same in auto tranny pans all the time, with NO evidence as to WTF...

mystery meat....covered with gravy....

:flash::hissyfit::bonkers:

Yes, now that you mention it Gene... I had some of this stuff in my tranny pan on that '99 Camaro... didn't worry me because I thought that after 120000 miles and the first time I changed the fluid and filter it was ok....

No bronze gear on that dizzy, just a standard steel gear....

changing oil/filter often ?? Well... first time after break-in, then again after 100 miles... then at 500, at 1200 and now at 1800miles.... it took me a year to get the most recent 600 miles on the car... driving the convertible is too much fun ... :blush:

Just out of curiosity I'll buy on of these wrap around oil filter magnets.
