Wife/me went to the beach today....way up north on the other side of Jax Florida....so to visit various camp sites and set up some trips....

so we took her '91 Miata with top down, I had my favorite ball cap on....and I noticed something, cruising up to ~75 mph I had NO problem with my hat blowing off, keep in mind I am 6'5" and so my head sticks up about 3" higher then the WS header.....

in my '72 vette, with modified seating, I am about an inch or more UNDER the W/S header.....and always have a high speed hat problem....

I don't understand WHY????

any of you all aero types can esplain to me Lucy????

OH, plenty of breeze today, so it was not a dead air day....that don't explain it....

something about the W/S rake?? even with my head above the header???

:lol::stirpot:

For many years I drove a '82 Honda CBX motorcycle which has a full fairing with a windscreen probably designed by persons without north American stature. I am 6' 2" and I found the there was a sweet spot from noisy buffeting with my eyes just looking over the top edge. Sitting tall my helmet felt like it was being pulled off. I fabricated a taller window so I could sit comfortably without hunching down. My guess is that you are inadvertently sitting at a point in the Miata where the directed over-flow of air is almost pushing your hat on. In the Vette, the air is swirling over and circling down around behind, pulling your hat up from the back flow coming behind and around you. Or, even behind the windscreen, your head is on the perimeter of a horizontal tornado.

Did you know that some people have swollen heads and there hats fit tighter at times.:goodnight:

Just trying to give some useless info here.....lol

The steeper rake of the vette windshield is probably creating a low(er) pressure area in the cabin. Look up the areo design of a "gurney flap"

I resemble that remark.....

That is interesting, did a Google/Wiki lookup on it....;)

What always amazes me is that on the interweb every american is always 6 foot something... then how come when I'm over there, most people are considerably shorter?

Because your Imperial/metric conversions are off? :lol:

Seriously, though, I'm 6'2" and always trying to figure out how to get more headroom and/or a lower seating position in my 77. I think the Recaros that I have yet to finish recovering will finally do the job.

Beee Leeee MEEEE....I would love to pay dearly and not lived with my skeleton for 69 years now.....

besides being a lo pack gig for since forever, the gymnastics of even simple CAR ownership are a PIA.....

and yes, there are maybe a dozen folks I have met as friends/associates who are noticeable taller than me.....

I refer to myself as the dinosaur.....wife is a foot shorter....

I have size 14 shoes these days....hers are 6 1/2.....

:lol::lol::cool:

Six foot something here also!

Gurney Flap, is that the section angled upward?

here's a photo of me, Tim (TimAT) and Gene (MrVette) just for comparision, even though I'm sitting I am the shortest of the three.... 5'11" and 210 lbs..... Gene is easy 6' 4" or 6'5" ..... probably the skinniest of the three as well :lol:

about aerodynamics and hat-loss: no problems in my C6 vert, don't rcall any issues in the Miata I used to have...... maybe just get some tighter fitting hats?
