This might sound crazy. But, has anyone had experience retro-fitting air bags to a mid year Corvette. I mean, we adapt all kinds of later years features to our cars, why not add this safety device which has been proven to save lives and reduce injuries? I know they're part of a complex system of sensors, seat belt tighteners, etc, but has anyone considered installing a 1st generation system with just a few bumper sensors and a (probably) ugly steering wheel bag?

Welcome to the motley crew of the Flying Dutchmen....

Sorry I can't help on that inquiry....must be someone who has though...

:amazed:

As you said SRS system is a "complex system of sensors, seat belt tightener, etc" not simply air bags mounted to the steering wheel. Air bags deploy based on the rate of deceleration of a vehicle. That is determined by many factors not just road speed. Airbags work in unison with the way a car crushes to absorb energy and that varies model to model. I am not an engineer but I don't know how you could know what bag system to install without smashing some cars. And then you would still probably have to modify the column and other parts.
:drink:

Much less when you have to start replacing crapassitors in ancient electronics otherwise the bags will NOT deploy....

too much mystery meat, and it's one of the gigs that as cars age, they will become unrepairable....have seen many a car with glued together steering wheels, no airbag due to some crash, obviously....

:crap::bonkers::flash:

I would think it could be done using a early system. The early style airbags just used a simple sensor that had a gold ball with a spring. When the car was in a wreck the ball would compress the spring and make contacts to blow the bag.

I would think that if you jury rigged a steering column air bag into a vehicle that was not designed for it, you would have as much chance as to killing yourself as compared to saving your life if it went off.
Just my 2 cents.

:shocking: I agree, but that still don't keep the older early generation airbags any better off then some jury rig....much less there is only one way to test if the bag itself is good, then what with any electronics??

it's a area of control from the .gov that maybe well something the .gov will use to eliminate all old cars....call out the naderite safety mavens...

:crap:

I have to agree here. The test all that crap with dummies.;)

Hmmm, not sure I would want ANY explosive device I built sitting right in front of me!

I would have to agree with you on that!

But is it ok if I build it??? :1st::shocking::gurney:

Sure, send it to Bird, lets test it in his car

Since it's Teri's DD, it might be a win-win.:D

Wassa matter sparky...you don't trust me wiring???:flash::ghost:
