Is replacement of the modulator valve a do-it-yourself project for a novice? I have a 73 L48 with TH400. The short rubber hose (vacuum hose) that goes from the modulator to the metal pipe is saturated with ATF and leaking. I believe that this means that the modulator valve is leaking. I am getting white smoke at start-up, but trans seems to shift ok.

Just a slip in/out, no linkage I recall....but it's been a while too....

at any rate, no courses in RS101......

:drink:

No deal Stuart- one bolt, a clip and it comes right out. THere's a valve behind it, and no spring unless it has a shift kit installed. As you pull the modulator, make sure to watch the valve- if it does come out, just make sure that you don't swap ends when you put it back in.

The white smoke at start could be because the modulator is bad, but It's more likely valve guide seals. Valve guide seals is more of a thing than the modulator.

I'm guessing you replaced the rubber flex cooler lines? and you did use hose marked "TRANS COOLER" and not generic 5/16 fuel line?

If your 73 is like my 79 as far as the cooler hoses, I would REALLY like to know how you get to the hose clamps off the side of the radiator. One of mine weeps a bit, but I don't see how to get to them other than pulling the radiator?

Welcome to the motley crew of the Flying Dutchemn....

once you get the clamp loose, generally you need take a U knife and cut the hose length wise, especially if it's old and dry....that stuff gets welded on there krazy tight....

:suicide:

Problem is just even getting to the radiator ends of the hoses though. I can see 'em, just can't get to them.

Yeh, I kinda thought so....pop the hood off there, scratch hinge plate outlines so aid the reinstall/bolt hinge positioning.....

then 3 bolts from behind the tires, into the sides of the support.....

swing it forward.....

PIA on my car too, :gurney::evil::drink:

Hoses

Your 79 must be more cramped than 73 SB. I got to clamps with 1/4 drive deep socket with 4" extension. Then had to cut hoses with a knife as mentioned to get them off.
If you have to pull radiator - Good Luck!
:crap:

Might take it to local tranny shop and see what they want for doing it.... would be the first time for me to not deal with "stuff"

I dunno man, I learned 1/2 a century ago, I mess it up myself just fine, don't need PAY someone else to do it.....:bomb::crutches::crap:
