Ok, thanks to everyone's help, I'm getting further on this project, but also deeper.
I ended up pulling the column all the way out to get at this shaft. Here is where I stand now:
To make the shaft shorter, it looks like I need to cut section #1 out and weld that end piece that clips the bearing in place. right? but that only leaves me with the shaft as short as the piece I cut out (#1) That bearing/bushing on the shaft that sits in the end of the column doesn't move, and it doesn't look like its supposed to. so how would you go about making the shaft any shorter than the length you cut? It seems like #2 (the shaft connected to the key lock) also prevents the bearing from moving further up the column, preventing the shaft from becoming shorter. So what do I do about this? cut it? remove it completely? and as for #3, can I just cut this off if that shaft must stay in the column?
**SPARKNOTES**
Can the bearing on the end of the shaft be moved up or down, or is it fixed to the shaft.
Thanks in advance, Chris
