I have been helping a friend get his 383 stroked motor going but we cant seam to get it to idle. The specs on the motor are Edelbrock performer RPM cam& hydraulic lifters .488/.510 – 234/244 117specs. Heads are aluminum 64 Cc with 190 intake ports. The intake is Edelbrock performer; air gap dual plane square spread bore. The carb is Ebelbrock 600 cfm.

The motor starts OK vacuum headlights are ok and vacuum breaks are ok it just wont idle. Idles from 500 to 1400.

Any suggestions?

DB would tell you is because you don't have spyderlights:toothbrush:

I'm going to suggest that you check float level after you double check for vacuum leaks. And then check fuel pressure.

Without dual clocked alternators your idle might be off, have the guys at your local O'Reily's verify correct idle speed for you .... thank you so very much.... :bounce:

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. was helping a buddy with his new build and we were having a problem with erratic idle 600cfm edelbrock carb,i finally found the problem, the throttle linkage was hanging on the return spring, worth a look. Now if you want to fly me over i would be more than happy to check it out for you :D

In the last three years , I have taken back "four" six hundred cfm ::Edlebrock::.. The float hang on them and the injection pumps leak. They were all brand New! Had one new 750 do the same.. Edlebrock says:: If the float sticks "Hit the top of the carb housing with a small hammer"" Now that is just pure bull shit answer straight from Eldebrock super tech factory type!!! Pull that carb and take it back,, As that problem must be in several of their carbs.. I have exchanged "4" 600cfm,,,,Do your self a favor and get it exchanged!!!!!!!!!!!

The 600 Edelbrock was running great for 2 years, I am beginning to think there is a leak at the intake where it bolts to the heads. The motor was machined flat so the gap at the intake may need a thicker intake gasket. I will pull it off and check it out this week. I did order a new 750 carb for the motor but I don't think that is the problem. BTW to bring back a two year old carb will be difficult with the 10,000 trip one way.

Very likely you need a thicker intake gasket. Clean the mating surfaces and install the intake with shims between heads and intake - you can also place shims or a block between the intake and block at the front and rear of the block. Then eyeball how the bolt holes line up, now measure what intake thickness you need. I ended up with the thickest that Summit sells - I think it was a Felpro gasket and .125" thick.

I'm very interested to hear how the 383 runs with the 750 carb, compared to the 600cfm.

Right.......... maybe it will idle with the 750 :crutches:

I'm sure it will idle with either one of the carbs, don't think the carb is the problem as it was running before.... I'd like to hear from you how much better (if any) the engine runs with the bigger carb. I have the same 600cfm carb and want to "upgrade" to a 750 :D

I sure will let you know how the new 750 runs out..................as I idle along:zzz:

I just need to get it here and that will take a couple of weeks to arrive and install.:trumpet:
