Trying to do a recovery on an older Gatway computer and it gets 1/2 way through detecting and installing devices then freezes, this on a destructive recovery. What are my options to get this thing back running?

Man, that could be anything, it take much more infos :
Model of the computer, what OS, what goes wrong and when.
Won't be online for the next week, but I could give a little help next week.
Good luck.

Give some more details. Are you reload op sys from disc.....or what?

The Gateway has the op sys files loaded on a partition for recovery (HD has C & D with the files on D) it looks like the files load fine but after rebooting the laptop goes through a series of screens (some flash by so quick I can't read them) and comes to a screen that tells me it is configuring hardware (keyboard, DVD etc)and when it gets to around 1/2 way through it freezes.

The internal recovery doesn't always work, especially after some real nasty attacks, etc.
If you have the 'recovery disk', which is your operating system on CD, I'd suggest reloading it. When doing this, and prompts come up for choices, choose the options for erase and fresh install.
Hope you backed up everything on it, cause you're gonna loose it now.
You'll also need to update your op system via .net after install, and get the latest service packs also. There's usually a devise driver disk that you'll need to install also. Reinstall any extra programs you had on it.
It's a PITA, but you'll end up with a fresh 'puter running at its best.
I suggest (final step) downloading Mozilla Firefox and using it as your .net browser.
http://www.mozilla.org/
Using MS Internet Explorer as your browser can and will get you into trouble eventually, as you may notice slower speeds and trouble developing.
Last suggest that I use is CC Cleaner utility. http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
Worth every penny!
When you're back up and running, run these utilities EVERYDAY!
-CC Cleaner
-Disk Cleanup
-Disk Defraggmenter
The last 2 found @ task bar 'Start' Programs/Accessories/System Tools.
Good Luck!

Two option, some hardware is baked in the laptop or the recovery files are trashed.

One way of testing this out would be booting the laptop with some linux based liveCD distro (as OS that loads entirely from the CD, not touching the HD). If it don't work, you'll know for sure it has to do with an hardware defects.
If some hardware died, well, you got a nice paperweight.

Otherwise, if it was running winXP, reinstalling from scratch is simple.
