Newer/New? car for wife....

Some of you may remember that my wife got hit HARD by some jerk about 13 months ago.....and her replacement car is not liked very well....

so the question is....

What in the way of a SAFE MPG machine on today's used market???

needs to be a 4 dr sedan, decent trunk room also....no V6's she needs MPG, auto trans, a/c, power steering/brakes, the usual stuff a granny would want....down the list a ways is....power windows/locks/fancy stereo/etc....

any suggestions??? budget is NOT wide open, but we looking for something RELIABLE....

I just drove the new GF's Toyota Yaris today. It's definitely an econo-box, hers has no bells and whistles other than heat, A/C and radio. 4 doors, a trunk and a fold down back seat, I just fit behind the wheel. It doesn't drive too badly.

74 lincoln mark IV was always my favorite comfortable, safe , good trunk ,mileage eh not so much. my current dd is a 2011 ford edge sport, a bit pricy , it does have a v6 but it is over 300 h.p. gets great mileage , easy to enter and exit, very pleased. the base models are nice too, and maybe cheaper to operate as the sport comes with 22" wheels.

Pre 2010 VW Jetta tdi diesel. up to 50 mpg (expect 48) and built like a tank....
