this is a post i made over at that other corvette internet forum. i think it's important enough to pass along over here. besides, i think many of you remember this from when it happened.

many of you who've been here a while remember this. some of you may have missed it, and some of you may still be too new to the forum to have heard it. this is a warning i hope you learn from me rather than 'the hard way'.
absolutely, under no circumstances, push your car by yourself. probably more so than any other production car ever made the c3 (and presumably the c2 as well) can be very dangerous. the problem is the proximity of the rear wheel in relation to the door, and in the case of pushing, you're body. if you really want the details just read the story below
backstory:
a couple years ago i rebuilt the engine in my '81. i took it out for a test drive but failed to make a critical adjustment. only about a mile from my house, the car stalled in the middle of the road. being a stick i thought, "no problem, i'll just push it, jump in and pop the clutch". so i got it rolling at a pretty good jogging speed and jumped. that's when things went horribly wrong. the rear tire clipped my left foot just as i jumped and took it under the wheel. the rest of me came down in the car with my right leg stuck between the seat and door sill. from that point on, i was pretty much along for a most unpleasant ride. ultimately, the car rolled about 100ft before coming to a stop at which point it rolled back off my foot.
i was only wearing a pair of old "garage shoes" no doubt most of you reading this have as well. the damage was pretty extensive.
pressure of the tire forced my ankle in direct contact with the asphalt, resulting in the "knuckle" part of the tibia being ground off. it also tore a playing card size hole in my skin and ripped out much of the tissue, including some tendon and ligaments in the area. as if all that weren't bad enough, the action attempted to pull my foot off at the ankle joint, separating the joint and allowing road rock and debris to get compacted up inside the joint.
the aftermath was a 10 day hospital stay, 3 months with 'external fixation' and 5 months using a "wound vac". it was about 5 months before i could even walk on that leg and i had to use a cane for a month or two afterward. the damage sustained is permanent and i'm now as good as i ever will be again. i have about 80% use of my left leg, which means no more running or jumping except in cases of extreme emergencies. i have constant discomfort, especially on long days in which i still make use of a cane. and my range of motion is strictly limited.
there are pics but the first time around they got removed because of the grossness. old timers can vouch for it. if you really, really want to see, there was a thread over in OT that didn't get shut down. just do a search for "gross pics" and go to page two.
you've been warned.
so, please understand, i'm not doing this to get sympathy or anything like that. i just don't want any of you to have to go through the same pain and trauma. please learn from this story. if you ever find yourself in the position of needing to move a vette, you need to have one person sitting in the car with a second or third person pushing. DO NOT do this by yourself!
since this isn't that other forum, i'm going to link to a pic. be warned now, they're kind of gruesome, so if you get queezy easily, you probably shouldn't click. feel free to peruse some of the other pics. there's a couple of the external fixation and wound vac if you're curious.

I was going to ask how you were doing. I wish there was some way i could have warned you about that. I did the same thing in the mid 80's but it just took the skin off, no meat and no bone. Then my brother did it with my car a few years later a little worse but not anything like yours.

I did post about it a few times on CF probably 4-6 years ago, its just hard to get the word out to everyone. It's good you are trying to get the word out.

I remember those pics (weren't they removed back then)?

Cute

That was you ?? I remember the original post and the pictures at CF - it looked horrible. It must have happened right before many members left ... back in 2006 ?

TT, that's 'mango' and 'kiwi'. little bitches! but they make up for it in cuteness, and 'oh-my-god' soft.

MYBAD, yep, that was me. happened 2 years ago today. 1/14 has a very unpleasant significance for me.

sad thing is, like many others, i had the car kind of catch my leg once or twice in the garage while just kind of rolling it around. never really though, "gee, this could rip my leg off if i'm not careful". which is what it tried to do.

So is it going to stay like this after two years or is it still improving ? I mean... looking at these pics 80% use or recovery is pretty good, you're lucky you didn't loose the foot alltogether....

OH SHIT, I must have missed that one, Clutch.....Jesus, what a mess....

I have had the rear tire tag my toe enough in the garage to know it's there alright...but nothing like that.....

take care man....:beer::shocking:

i think it's pretty much as good as it will ever be. the only thing i can do now is work to strengthen what i have left.
kind of grossed out mrs 'dust with it the other night. since i can't run anymore i've started skating again. i always enjoyed skating, and i used to be fast (amateur level competition fast anyway). i can still skate because the boots have enough support to keep my foot in place but needless to say, my leg is pretty weak. anyway, i get back and i'm laying on the livingroom floor stretching my legs and i say, "you know, it feels weird 'cause i can tell i'm working muscles that aren't attached to anything."
she gets this disgusted look and says, "that's just gross."
:p

Glad to hear that you somewhat recovered. Keep using it and hopefully you can regain a little more use of it.

I popped my Achilles tendon pushing my Vette a few years ago. Nowhere near as bad an injury as yours. It still took a couple years before I fully recovered. Thankfully, I'm running again.

Hey, I just noticed that Turtle and I both have stars by our names when we post. What the hell's that about. I always worry whenever I fall into the same group as Turtle.

I remember your thread. Yes the pictures were gross and still serve as a reminder to me to be careful. I gave myself a hernia a couple years ago pushing my car, got it operated on but it still bothers me.
I ain't the young buck I used to be, and it is hard to admit that I just can't do all the stuff I did before.
Thanks for the reminder of how quickly it can happen.
