Race pan bummer

Dang,

After my last go-round with the rear bearing and subsequent oil pan leak I broke down and bought the Milodon roadrace oil pan with the wedge kickouts to get more oil in the sump. A lot of desert high RPM freeway work made me think it was a good idea.

Now, I pull off the stock pan and find no evidence of the massive oil leak. It appears to be coming from above. Then, looking at the Milodon pan it is about 1 1/2" deeper reducing my already minimal ground clearance. It even hangs below the truck oil filter and I've already drug two of them on the ground so I'll be back to the stock filter.

I don't know what to do now? I guess I'll stew on it for awhile.

Maybe my car is just too low? I know the rear is much lower than factory, maybe the front has been lowered as well?

Time will tell....

If you have a kicked out pan the long filter most likely won't fit anymore, on V-Twins his long filter didn't fit anymore either.

Thanx TT,

I ditched the long filter because I had drug two of them to death. Last weekend with the pan rotation exercise. I live in the desert and have some offroading to do to get home each day. About 100 feet of dirt road.

My car seems to be way too low compared to other C3's I look at. All of them show a good 2" (50mm) above the tire to the fender whilst mine is just at or below the tire line. Hence, about an hour ago I stuffed 1/4" (7mm) shims into the rear spring rods and raised the rear of the car making the fender line just about or a bit above the tire. I cleared two of the three killer speed bumps I usually have to cross with only a slight muffler drag on the third one.

I hate to go to the stratospheric heights of the stockers but I certainly can. Maybe then my new pan would fit:)

followup to the above...I see no multiplication factor in this spring linkage. If I put in a 1" shim shouldn't that raise the car 1 INCH? There doesn't appear to be any motion ratio involved here???

If you can't return the pan, cut it apart with a bandsaw or plasma and tig it shallower. You need 7" to fit a Melling Select series oil pump, that's as shallow as you can go.

If that wont work, then here is the pan I use from Speedway 7 quart, double wing, 7" deep.

The original starter can be replaced and the truck filter can be used. Has a bunch of trap doors and a bolt in windage tray and scrapers.
Pretty good for 100 bucks.

Mine has about 1/2" fender clearance and I hit the exhaust under the diff on speedbumps occasionally, but never the front. Pics are from before I lowered it, but I now have 4" from the tranny xmember to the ground.

That's the one I went looking for initially, probably upon your recomendation. But being an 81 I have a different dimension on the crank seals. So I bought the Milodon.

As my car seems to be slammed to the limit without me knowing any better I might be OK just raising it a bit to a more reasonable ride height. Even as that is breaking my racers heart....
