My dad worked in his own business and finally hung it up at age 72, died at 79....had a long series of strokes in there, kinda tough to watch...

so I was wondering how you guys are handling 'retirement' in that do you just have free daze to do as you wish, get involved in community/charity work like my neighbor, drive UPS like another neighbor, or set around and bitch like mad about crazy family members like the guy across the street?? or like me, stick with a 'job' you know on a very part time basis, and play with cars to stay outta the wife's hair...like here now, after some years of remodeling this house, I have run outta shit to do, so boredom on that score, maybe blow out a window and put on another back deck....then it really IS end of the road....

so how do you all handle it..??

:crutches::lol:

Sorry Gene, I am not there yet, nor do I know if I will ever have that luxury. I will probably end up somewhere between you and your Dad. I own my own business, I'll never have enough money to retire on so I will probably work until I die, most likely part time in my later years - and will also "work" on the car(s) for R&R.....:rain:

I am 50, selling the oversized 5 bedroom house I am in and hope to buy the next house CASH with the equity from this house. That is as close to retired as I will get, little or no mortgage to worry about, just taxes, maintenance and day to day expenses.... Hopefully then I will be able to enjoy life a little more.

Same here, I own my truck, small business for the last 17 years and if I calculate correctly, I sould be able to retire around 2045. :surrender:

Nahh! seriously, my wifes should retire in 2 years she been workin at the phone co for 33 years. Her plans are to come trucking with me (I teached her how to drive) for a while on and off so boredom wont hit her too much.

Me? I dont think I'll ever retire, I'll stop trucking for sure, been all over the place and it's getting harder and harder to make a decent buck.

Last time I traded the truck I applied at a truck driving school. Past every tests and at the last minute I changed my mind. I trade truck every 3 years so next time ,I'll end up there or I'll probably work locally on a cement truck or a dumpster.
But I dont think I'll stop working even if it's for a couples of days a week.

My dad got sick (skizofrenia) after a couple nervous breakdowns in his 40's and he never recovered. He's still under heavy medication but he's not the same. That prompted me to dream about retiring early, but it came at a cost of being a workaholic.

To answer your question, I retired about 3 years ago and made myself a promise that I would return every favour, spend much needed time with my family and work on the "to do list" that I had been neglecting for all those year first before I truly relax and enjoy the fruits of my labour. I still have about another 482 items on that list which will take several years to complete. What I have found is that many now ask me to help them since they feel I have all the time in the world.......go figure.

Retirement is a dream come true for me, early retirement, well it doesn't get any better, if it's of your choice.

Retirement ?

This is what you do when you retire. We spend all of our extra time talking on the Forums. It makes us feel somewhat younger, :bonkers: and realize that we are not the only ones that don't have everyday problems.

I enjoy going to breakfast everyday, to hear all of the BS stories that everyone can come up with.

I retired in 2004. In 2006 I decided that sitting on my ass just made it get larger. SOooo, I went to work part time at a local NAPA store. I do 32 hours a week, I buy parts for my cars for 10% over cost, I put money in the safe every week and I enjoy my free time with my wife and my Corvette. Works for me.

You drawing a real retirement or just sponging off the wife?

If that's the case, there are shitloads of guys who are retired. I see a bunch around here. They start in their 20's and go all the way to death.

Wife works her book keeping business, it's basically 32- hours/week, depending on season, thinking of renting a C-1 store front....I"m against it...
so have to tread lightly....working 60 hrs/week to pay rent/overhead is not my idea of existence....F that crap....like me she works outta the house....

I kick in all the overhead, she kick in the food bill, I kick her bux for cphones in her name....I pick up internet and utilities.....

KEEP working, sucker, I have my SS check to cover my ass....:bounce:

and when I get tired enough to not work PT that means I tired enough to not work on MY house, OR the vette, in which I going to find some entertainment....

I would love to do a PT parts house job....but the footwork all day would not do......my feet are nearly useless, getting worse every month..:hissyfit:

I'm 66. I retired about 8 years ago. Spent all my free time working on the 'vette. Happy as a pig in shit. Then, 3 years ago, my wife retired. The good times are all gone. Honey do list keeps growing.

My only recent break was from August, 2008, when I had a stroke, until last week when she had my ass doing landscaping.

Jeep steering box is still not completely installed.

I'm doing very well since I retired in 95 from a full career in the USAF. I went back to work, because 38-39 is too young to retire. I've had a few jobs here and there. Now as some of you may know, I work at the famed "BoneYard" at Davis-Monthan AFB, in Tucson, AZ. I'm very content to do what I do, still serving my country, even without a uniform on. Some of us are just do damn patriotic it ain't funny. Looking for that 2nd retirement in another 8-10 years!!!! :bounce:

:suicide: I would LOVE to have your job, even PT, talk about a toy box....

shit, I"d do it for FREE, .....serious....

Crap. I have 8 more years to go. I will be 62, have 40 years in the IBEW, and qualify for SSI, provided SSI and the IBEW aren't out of $$$$.:o
(My mortgage pays off the same year). It might not be the best plan, but it's mine.

I retired in 2006 at age 57. Like an earlier poster, it was a dream come true for me also. After about 35 years in various machine shops I was worn down physically and mentally. I never had any money handed down to me. My retirement income came from lots of overtime, living as frugally as possible, and investing carefully.
I still stay as active as possible. After getting all the put off jobs around the house taken care of I recently took a summer weekend job at a local drag strip (Texas Motorplex). During the week I usually jog 2 1/2 miles a day, tend to the daily chores around the house, and work in at least one fishing trip a week.
I have friends who are capable of retiring at any time, but continue to work because they enjoy what they do. Nothing wrong with that at all. Like the old saying goes......some people work to live and some live to work.

Come on down and check us out. I'm still working on our "driving" tour of the boneyard. Still waiting on the commander, he's pretty busy, but dammit, I want an answer. His secretary wants me to cook for our annual family day, and I'm not gonna do it if he doesn't give me an answer, soon. :bomb:
