OK, got the new intake yesterday and found that the holes for the NPT plugs are not tapped deep enough, the plugs stuck out way too far so I went to HarborFreight and got NPT taps :smash:

I think I'm going to drill/tap 1/4"NPT for the temperature sensor where the yellow dot is (pic below). I do not like the 1/2"-1/4" adapter and I prefer the sensor towards the bottom of the cavity and not on top.
What is that threaded hole under the Made in USA tag for ?? Maybe I can drill and tap that for the temp sensor.

The bump under The Made in USA thing is for an alternator bracket on some cars. Not ours! Careful with the tap - 1/4 turn at a time.

The bump under the USA thingy is too low so I had to drill on the other side. Drill size for 1/8" NPT is "Q" which is .332" or 8.4mm. Since this is aluminum I just used a 8mm drill and it turned out pretty good:

Did some minor grinding to match the intake gasket a little better...

Gold brake booster/mc, gold waterpump! A true german LOL ;)

Nice brake booster check valve....billet alu piece from summit. Available w/ AN or barb hookup:

Test drove the new combo today, engine ran like crap with the 800cfm Edelbrock "Thunder" series AVS carburetor. It was running extremely rich, the fumes were just horrible and I think it messed up the spark plugs :hissyfit:

I re-installed my 600cfm Performer carb and after a minute or so it ran fine .... guess the spark plugs needed a little time to recover from the other carb....

So what's wrong ? Is a 800cfm carb simply too big for a 383ci SB ? Not sure if I want to waste more time and money on a calibration kit and install smaller jets or just send it back....

800 is not too big, but 600 is too small. Something is not right with the 800. Shouldn't be too tough to get it right. Start with the idle circuit and work your way up the power circuits. Check the float level while you are in there.

I agree with G- the 600 on a 383 that thing will be badazz up to about 5000 and fall flat on it's face. Can't run if you can't breathe.

I was just reading a few articles across the net. As I suspected: some say Holley is junk, some say Edelbrock is junk, some say the Q-jet is junk .... I don't care if a Holley might be good for another 8HP or if the Q-jet improves my gas mileage by 2mpg.... a brand new carb should be running right out the box - just like the 600cfm that I installed 5 years ago... a few minor adjustments might improve overall performance but it shouldn't be necessary to buy extra jets and metering rods for $60 to get the carb running lean enough so the fumes don't kill me...
ok... "rant off" ....

Fortunately I did not buy the carb on Ebay. Summit has always been great with returns so I don't expect any problems getting a refund or store credit.... that of course is another reason not to mess with the carb, once I opened it I'm pretty much stuck with it..
Thinking about trying the Edelbrock Performer #1407 750cfm carb instead of the 1812 that I bought....
