S10 Chevy starting problem--"security"

1999 Chev S10 pickup, 160,000 miles, not a lot of options but one is an anti-theft security system.

Ever since I bought it in 2000 with 17,000 miles on it, the "security" light on the dash would occaisionally come on for a while, but it made no difference to anything. Then after a few years, once in a great, great, great while it wouldn't start--Fire up, die. Fire up, die. I'd have to let it sit for 30 minutes, then it would fire up and run. I didn't even know what was the problem till a couple years ago, but it was so rare I didn't worry about it too much. But for the last 6 months or so, it's started happening more often. Lately, once every couple weeks, sometimes a couple times a day. This is unacceptable.
I talked to my mechanic friends, they said it's not uncommon at this age, but an expensive bitch to fix. Replace the entire ignition system from key switch to computer. They've tried hot wiring them on other cars to no avail.

Any ideas from you guys?

Two Chevy pickups in the family now, an S10 from like '94 and a '96 Silverado....

Years ago the S10 developed a battery drain problem, killed the battery overnight....traced to a ten amp fuse that fed the 'body control computer'....what ever in hell THAT is....went to get to the thing, and it's so well buried in the dash/passenger side, I gave up.....so I got smart and bent a fuse tab over and wired it to a switched hot main feed......get in the truck, turn on the key, wait about 5 seconds for the silly thing to boot, then when the chimes and dash take off, start the truck, been that way for years now....

the silverado had a fuse marked 'lighting' with a 300 mil drain, no lights on, hell with it, same trick, but being as it was a 50 amp fuse, I put a relay in the circuit, closes only when ignition is on....

way tooooooo much electronicus crappicus in today's vehicles....

The computers get funny if the grounds are bad.

NO doubt, but to trace all that crap, pushing 70 here now, I doing it my way, getting tough to climb all over/under/upside down/inside out under some convoluted damn DASH to find the funky funny fucked up fluke fine wire .....

Sounds like the passlock sensor in the ign switch is going bad... I know on the Vats cars you can measure the resistance of the sensor wire with the key in, cut it and put a resistor of the same value in to bypass the sensor. You should be able to do the same thing with passlock.

Put the key in and measure the yellow resistor code wire to get the resistor value. Then you should be able to bypass this by connecting the orange/black and yellow with the proper resistor (+/- 10%)

It would be ideal to be able to measure the resistor code when the truck is in the no-start condition to make sure it is infact the sensor. (meaning you would get a different or no resistance value)

I ordered one of these 'passkey' bypass modules from this company. It cost $200 but I figured it was worth it, they did the research and manufacture it.

It works fine, or at least it has for the past week. No more friggin "security" light flashing at me all the time, no more worry about if the truck will start.

When I put in the FI on my car, one of the first most obvious things was to eliminate the VATS off the chip....my '87 had a VATS defeat in the performance chip it had....

too much crap in modern cars....

this '96 Silverado we have here is safe from the above, so it seems, but the S10 is not....it's a '98......
