SBC Boat Motor Death

WOT on the lake for about a mile, dead. It was fun while it lasted. Pulled all the plugs, don't see any sign of failure. The motor does turn over so it hasn't seized up. I have no idea what went wrong.

Here's my question. The motor is a stock 295hp 350ci 2 bolt out of a 67 Camaro. If I bolt those heads onto my L48 motor that is sitting in my garage, will they up the compression enough to make decent power? Also, would it be a bad idea to use the Camaro cam in the L48? Seeing as how it is probably really old? If I get it machined for reuse, will it have less lift? Can a cam even be turned like a crank?

So basically what I'm asking is, do I run the stock L48 in the boat? Or should I make a franken motor?

Cams are so cheap, not worth regrinding.... flat tappet cam and lifters is like $100 or so....

The heads should work on your L48, any idea what the chamber size is ? Stock was what? 76cc ??

Still in school, $100 is a big expense to me right now. We'll see if I get a summer job.

I have no idea the stock cc. I was hoping you guys would know. I'll google some stuff and report back.

Here's another question. After driving this thing on the lake, I can tell that 4K rpm at WOT for 10 mins straight will be a rountine thing. Will the L48 cast pistons hold up?

Well I played around with an engine calculator, I input average specs for a SBC (like .025 PTD, .041 HG) with the 76cc heads and I gave the pistons a -6cc dish to yield a 8.5:1 CR, which I believe is stock.

Changed only the head cc to 64, actually 63.3 and the CR jumps to 9.7, which I think should make decent power. So it looks like I'll be building a franken motor.

If it is trully a 67 Camaro 350 block that b;ock is a special casting and can be sold for some $$$ to a camaro guy. The 67 350 had the hole in the rear for a smog tube like a 327 but was a 1 year only casting.

64cc is typically giving you 9.5:1 CR with stock pistons, not too shabby....
I think 76cc is stock for most gen 1 SBCs....

when I say $100 for a cam and lifters, that is less than any company will charge you for re-grinding that old cam.... you still want new lifters with a re-ground cam....

the stock L48 with a little over 9:1CR will be ok... not a screamer but ok for the money spent..... if you're on a budget just use the parts you got and enjoy the boat...

Why not just fix what you got right in the boat, instead of pulling it, which is a huge PIA what with alignment fixtures/tools, etc.....if it's not seized, it sounds fixable...no??

Check the connector in the red circle,if its dirty or loose it can shut down the engine.

Spark or fuel.
Check the compression.

And you own a boat?:tomato::tomato::tomato:

I absolutely did not have the money for this boat. I was fantasizing about buying one of these for a few years, always looking on craigslist for fun. I almost did buy one back when I had a job. Anyways, I found this one sooo cheap you wouldn't believe it. They guy who sold it to me needed bail money quick.

I can easily turn it around and sell it for three times the amount of money it cost, including the money I put into it. Minimum, I will come out with 300%. I would have been dumb not to buy it.

I found out how how to fix the motor. It was pretty involved. I had to plug the coil wire back in. I'm used to an HEI okay! No separate coil wire to check! Leave me alone!!!

Still, it's nice to know I have a spare shortblock.
