Is there a (running only on open track days) rule or a reason to keep it?

*background, I've replaced the stock C3 tank with a stainless one that mounts substantially lower than the original.

I have caught references to this, and so the P/owner replaced my gas tank, which in spite of my water in tank from bum fuel down here, I have caught up with it, and inspect regularly....and have no issues, but have had the tank outta there a couple times, and only metal I see is the straps and support bar.....my car is a '72, and I have a suspicion it never had any....

:gurney:

Probably only offers minimal safty in a crash. I always thought that was was a poyethelene sheet in later cars, didn't know it was steel.

There is no shield on early vettes nor is there one on 78-82. 77 is the last year to have it, started in 75.

I think your wrong, my 82 has a plastic inner tank with metal skin and my 1990 was the same way. I've heard people refer to the 90 as having a bladder but and I just cut my 90's tank up and it was that thick plastic like my 82 has.

Pictures I have seen of bladders is nothing like what my 82 or my 90 had. The plastic in both tanks is about 3/8th's inch thick.

This is a seperate shield it goes over the tank. I know the 78-82 have a plastic tank the sheet metal is just there for structural rigidity, the plastic is the real tank on those.

Ive never had my 82 tank out but that is what it looks like from the top. The 90 tank had a shell though completely around it.

what year did pintos start blowing up?

I wonder if it was a bandaid for safety. Without the shield on a crash ruptured tank, gas would go everywhere, with the shield it's only going down.... maybe by 78 they got smarter about what happened and realized it was pointless?

My tank looks more like this one. It isn't just a upper shield it surrounds the whole tank.

Not mine just a guy who sent me this picture for ideas on how to put braided lines on my 82.

removeable bladder

my 82 tank, this is not a removeable bladder it is solid plastic that won't budge, my 90 vette also had thick plastic liner like this in it's tank. and it's tank was surrounded like that first tank I posted a picture of.
