active ingredient in bleach.....so if the bleach evaporates, dries in the sun, is the chemical gone too, or is it reactivated when it rains???

is the bleach action, killing of mildew/mold on a rooftop stopped when it evaporates?? I tried some as a weed killer also, jury still out on that one....

The above is a curiosity question,....I did this once before some years ago and the roof shingles turned white for quite a while again....

but got curious to ask about how the active chemical listed on the bottle, worked..??

Gene, you should have been a chemist. Let me know how that works on the weeds. I got some bamboo I like to give a drink to. I'm coming down there to hang with you! Maybe we can come up with something.

AS I understand it, it gets used up by the organics it oxidizes, so 1 gal of bleach kills 1 gal of mildew with 0 left. Don't know the real ratios.
Sunlight breaks it down (outgassing), hense the need for stabilizers in pools.

Now I've been buying chlorine for 95cents/gal and 1 gal makes shitloads of gallons of bleach.
Works great as a weed killer/sterilizer at full strength. Creates instant rust too.

Have to regularily lecture my wife because she makes her bleach too strong.

Be carefull Gene, it will also kill your sperm. :amazed:

I really need to find a for sure weed killer.....years ago I put on a room addition, and the fill dirt to regrade the back yard as well as fill the foundation walls previous to pouring the slab, came from a freeking old closed down DAIRY down the road....well what do COWS eat?? CLOVER apparently, the whole damn yard in back is growing with it...and it's some aggressive shit.....and hard to kill, I can get normal weeds pretty good with gasoline, but this shit still hung in there....so....been all the high priced crap that is so EPA cut down it don't do a thing anymore, waste of money...so I guess I have to put engine oil in with the gas, but don't want to make a greasy mess out of the dead weeds/clover/whatever.....

I was bleaching the roof shingles anyway....someone suggested try on weeds, hell it kills mold/mildew why not plants???

and I sure as hell NOT any chemist, it and me don't get along too well....

:crap:

It works by dissociating into chlorine atoms/chlorine gas. The chlorine gas destroys bacteria, mold, and I think virus's also. Commerical bleaches (Chlorox) advertises a 99% kill ratio. It also bleaches fabrics. After it's applied, and the chlorine gas dissapates, it leaves a salt residue behind. Put a little on your hand/finger and wait awhile and taste. You'll get a strong salty taste.

I used to live in a rural Australian town and I didn't trust the tap water at all, for one reason it often had a bad smell. When washing dishes, I used to put a big glug of Chlorox into the dishwater to make sure. I had a cat at the time and after washing dishes, she just went crazy to lick the salty residue that was left on my hands. She got so carried away, she often acted like she was just going to start going after the flesh...she'd start knawing on my hand. (....and at this juncture, I've ran out of chlorox stories.)

Well I B a SOB, the strangest shit happens over the net, I have this fixed male cat about 4 y/o who jumps up and does the 'making biscuits' routine, the rubbing the arms, etc......this afternoon, after the roof work that cat starts in on the desk while I resting/noodling on the computer...he lays down super close and starts biting my fingers, had to chase him off twice....

so ti's the salt....hope he isn't needing more, maybe add some to the cat food??
