I recently acquired a new customer for my handyman business - one that I could do without. I did a few small jobs for this guy and he paid me right away but then he starts calling me 2, 3, 4 times a day asking questions, complaining about a minor issue and wanting me to lower an estimate for a small roof job from $950 to two or three hundred dollars. WTF??? The materials for the roof job will run me close to $300. This guy keeps telling me how he is on a fixed income and how he is disabled. Too fucking bad, not my problem. I can only do so much charity work before I start to starve too. He calls me all hours of the day and night and is a major irritation. Today I called him and left a not so nice message telling him that I don't want to be married to him anymore and that he is being a nuisance. I hate being pushed to this point but some people just don't get it!

Hah~~ I don't recall knowing what you did for a living, I been doing the same thing since ~85 or so, on and off, Had a nice little trade going for some years doing Sears bathroom remodeling, then kitchens for Hechinger Hardware, before they folded....long story there.....then many pickup jobs on my own,

did work for an outfit called Handyman connection before they closed the local franchise some years ago, then for a couple guys here in town, must have done about 50 houses for them, flipped the house next door to me up in Maryland....that one was foundation through roof....back around '94 or so....

redoing everything from roof down on the house now, one of the guys moved to Atlanta, due to wife being VERY seriously ill, and so with 3 small kids, she wanted to be near her folks, understandable......but he/they still own a series of homes here in Jacksonville.....and two of them trashed SO bad by section 8 tenants, that one of them is being scrapped for land value, maybe 35 grand, you maybe find a handyman who will be 50 grand....maybe...
that house was actually ABUSED....I mean they deliberately beat the HELL outta the joint....and left it full of furniture.....

the one I"m working on was built in the 60's sometime.....man what neglect will do, had to get a bush hog in there to mow the lawns.....weeds big as my wrist.....so bad the county had to get involved, the inground pool in the backyard was open due to no lock fence gates.....and it ripped from there....

been on it for about 2 months now....the damn DOG piss smell was SO bad on some 1800' of carpeting it was black on the underside, so out came everything, including tack strip.....then in with a garden sprayer fulll of piss killer and chlorox.....now that the walls are shot, and the trim done, and the floors cleaned, and all the exterior doors replaced, it looks like we maybe have something, finally....

it is simply amazing how a few pets can kill a house.....How would YOU feel about living with someone in your house that lock the bedroom doors with KEY?? as in change the doorknobs?? then evidence of the door being forced?? and some dawg that ate the door jamb/trim up???

how about pulling some wiring outta a light switch/duplex combo in a bathroom, ready to change over to GFI and find the thing wired with lamp cord all burnt to a crispy critter???

how about a garage/utility sink removed and the DWV left wide open??? but the copper pipes soldered/capped off correctly???

:harhar: the shit I seen, sure you have too, lets hear of some of the stuffs you seen.....

I had 2 rental houses in CAMDEN NJ, one of the worst cities in America. I once lived there, when it was nice... seems like a fairy tale now. Now all it is is drugs and violence and empty shells of houses.
Anyway, yes Gene, the two houses were rented, both section 8. A guaranteed check in the mail every month. One tenant took excellent care of the house, clean, nicely decorated, I wish my house looked as tasteful... the other one was the complete opposite. Roaches everywhere, nasty kitchen, white bath tub was BROWN from her dead skin cells, she never washed or cleaned much. She got busted for selling her food stamps for drug money, went to jail and got IMpregnated by one of the guards, which then guaranteed her another 18 years of welfare income, then TRASHED my house to the tune of 30 grand.

But this has nothing to do with the clueless individual I was originally talking about. He had the NERVE to call me back and leave me another lengthy message AFTER I told him to please not call me any more. I am going to give the SOB his money back and tell him to take a long walk.... off a short cliff. His harassing me just ain't worth the few bucks I made off of the job.

I remember being a TV man, running house calls, back in the 60's but man what a difference between the EARLY 60's and say early 70's, when the shop was forced to REDLINE certain districts.....because of no pay, and breakins on the service wagons.....one of them tube caddy's used to cost us about a grand.....lose a few of them, and it's a game changer alright.....

HUGE attitude change ......IMO brought on by welfare....all the hippy dippy New Society crap....lay around all day smoking dope/worse, doing crime....

enabled by food stamps, rent checks in form of sect 8 housing, AFDC, the rest, and we wonder what happened???

We get people like that all the time in my line of work. If the boss or I pick up on it before they've hired us, we try to gently steer them to someone else. Not worth the trouble.

So can you fix my roof for $300 or not? Do I have to get competitive bids or the lawyers involved ??? Wtf dude ???
LOL

I steer them to my worst competitor so he can run in circles and waste time while I go out and find something profitable to do. :club:
It's not very nice but I learned it from a guy that used to do it to me.

This SOB called me back AGAIN, 4th time today, second time since I told him not to call me anymore. Something is definitely wrong with this guy. I told him to leave me alone and he just CAN'T!:hunter:

That's a nice way to solve the problem - if you can use it. Not so much in my field - any given competitor I'll end up across the table from at some point. No point in torching bridges, even if I really don't like them.

Sounds like you are a lawyer.....

I think you should do both! LOL!

So what if he offered a case of beer in the mix? :mobeer:

That would make all the difference in the world now, wouldn't it? I can starve and be drunk at the same time!:mobeer:

That is actually a line I give people who are too cheap to do a job right. I tell them I can't do it for them but that there is a guy who will do it for a case of beer, he hangs out in the liquor store parking lot, you can find him there.:stirpot:
