Since my corvette is a convertible and has sidepipes, I didn't bother with sound insulation, only Reflexit (Lowes) for the heat.
When I did the 72 442 I used Fatmat (ebay). You dont need to cover the entire panel to take a lot of the noise out, but I did anyway. Since this was my comfy cruiser I laid down adhesive fatmat, followed by reflexit glued to it. I put the tar paper life factory noise insulation over the reflexit followed by jute backed carpet. It's as quiet and comfy as a new caddy.
I feel EXACTLY the same re sound insulation...mines a convertible so the sound will easily travel through the top/windows/holes- why even bother? My BMW has double paned windows and about 700lbs of sound deadening from the factory- and you can hear every word my girlfriend says..
.in the Vette- I hope I won't hear a single word...
I'm am working put thin aluminum covering IN the engine compartment spaced a ¼inch or so from the firewall-and trans tunnel to keep heat OUT of the interior. My feeling is once the heats IN the cabin- the padding is just gonna STORE it...
