Just to reiterate what I think everyone knows, the Tesla battery only has the energy of a very few gallons of gasoline. An electric motor, which can produce maximum torque at almost 0 rpms, and even without a transmission has, as we have seen here, dramatic short term performance. 20 gallons of gasoline has far more energy content that a lithium battery.
Racing the lithium battery, or just driving it to it's maximum range, is going to deteriorate the battery. For maximum lifetime, the battery needs to be operated with a minimum depth of discharge. When it comes time to replace the battery, this is a major expense. The price of the Tesla is heavily subsidized by the government..the taxpayers are contributing to the purchase of the car. It's still an approximate $90,000+ car even with taxpayers subsidies. A few years from now, the owner will be looking at replacing the battery.
