The Army's Spectacular, Hidden Treasure Room

Yup, and another couple of cool places are Aberdeen Proving Grounds, north of Baltimore, you see the sign off I 95, a field full of every type armor vehicle you can imagine, many acres worth, and a good indoor display also.....

then the Wash Navy Yard SW in DC....they have a 16" Navy gun there on display with a piece of Jap armor from WW2 and a hole blown through all 2' of the steel thickness, you see real clear what happens when unstoppable force meets 2' of steel, interesting extreme physics.....and this is outdoors, inside you find the finest collection of Nautical Antiques .....

and at Dulles Airport you find an annex of the Smithsonian Air/Space Museum.....SR71 and Shuttle on display inside.....it's a HUGE building that takes 2 DAYS to see it all, and that's skipping displays.....

I too the ex and her kids to Aberdeen after a cousins wedding back in 2010 and they had started moving the tanks off-site. Her boy was a walking encyclopedia for WWII tanks... and he couldn't ride a bike or walk and chew gum.

The website says the Ordnance Museum is being transitioned to Fort Lee, VA:

OH HELL, I didn't know that, obviously.....must be a hell of a project, some of that stuff not moved in decades....rusted shut, I"d imagine....hell on the bearings.....:crutches:

Wow, just awesome. My uncle was part of a team that searched one of Hitler's homes from what I was told. I wonder if any of those items may be something he came across. He was an engineer. At first thought I wondered why an engineer? But I guess they have an expertise in knowing what to look for.

My uncle was a Civil Engineer, from Case Inst. of Tech. Cleveland Ohio....who followed Patton, he was a phone company employee, and so was behind Patton setting up .com for whatever passed for a .gov behind the lines....obviously part of logistics support.....at some time just before end of the war, he came home after a very similar Jeep accident that Patton suffered, but Uncle Roy survived, but did that nitroglycerine tablets to keep his heart working decently....I remember as a teenager learning to drive, that he was very paranoid about passing any car going DOWN hill, but no sweat going UP hill or on level ground.....

I know he would never talk of the war in front of me or my cousin, his son.....I suspect he seen some fugly shit.....:spit::hijack:

I last saw Aberdeen on a trip with my kids one nice summer day, some 25 years ago, and the vehicles looked pretty decent, really.....for setting outside in Maryland weather, which would be under 20' of snow now.....:crap:

Wow! A small world, I'm from the Cleveland area, now in ATL. My dad and three brothers served at once. I forget the name of the neighborhood but it was a Polish area. My dad was recon and served under Patton in Africa. He was a jeep driver/runner. If you don't know, recon is in front of the front line. They would find the enemy, map the area. Then my dad would haul ass back to the artillery. One reason for speed was in hope if you hit a land mine you could beat it out before boom! He lost three Jeeps with very little injury. One was from a mine, it flipped over forward. He said it threw him clear. My dad, a few times opened up and told me some stories, gruesome stories. If what he had done once then today? He would be in jail for a long time. He killed a family thinking they were Germans. He told them/stories only once and only to me. He never relived his military life. A thing I notice, real hardcore vets don't talk about, "back in the day." I missed Nam, graduated in 74, with the draft ending in 73.

My dad was drunk under a tank. He saw two Lieutenants shoot each other in the foot. So they could get out. I asked him if he reported what he saw. He said no, you don't want someone there who didn't want to be there anyhow. I think he also understood the mental side, let em go.

My uncle the one I previously mentioned. Was guarding some of Hitler's brass when they committed suicide. They bit the poison pill hidden in their mouths.

Polish and in Cleveland, so you in the ghetto on West side then, all of West side, decades ago was divided into certain ethnic 'ghettos'.....all the Italians/Polish/Russians lived in certain areas....

My background is Russian on both sides, from 'Russian Hill' and St. Theodosious Cathedral my cousin's grandfather helped build.....been a while....my father and mother moved from Cleveland to Wash DC in '39 Dad was born in '05 so too young for WW1 and too old for WW2, UNLESS called up as an Ohio Nat. guard member from 1927, for the Jap invasion that never took place.....so Dad spent some time at Camp Perry training sharpshooters for the war, had a NRA merit service award for doing it, I gave it to my son....along with his other pix and some award of the times.....
I born in '44 and so in/out of the Army in '66, extra lumbar vertabrae in my lo back, and so been a PIA all my life....skeleton is a POS, that's life....

So growing up Russian in Wash DC during the 50's through early 70's was a bit of a trip, after that, I was too busy working to care anymore.....

So did you live in the area where, The Deer Hunter, was filmed? Our era was during the decay of Cleveland. All though your family moved. Neighborhoods I knew from visiting relatives went to hell. I grew up in northern Summit County, Sagamore Hills. Right on the county line. My mom grew up in Twinsburgh on SR 82. They were poor dirt farmers.

If you haven't seen, Kill The Irishman, check it out. It's a movie about Danny Greene. There are some great cars in it also. All though, I don't think much of the filming was done in Cleveland.

Only thing I can remember is my Uncle's old house, cousin sold it after his Mom's passing, and cousin's wedding in the old church his grandfather headed.....I remember a Shaff Rd. not so far and I THINK the old sub div was Brookfield/Brook--something Heights.....at any rate house was sold maybe 25 years ago....6005 Brookside Dr. was the addy, I look up old addy's once in a while just for shits and giggles.....like my Dad's old house that has suffered greatly over the decades, like new owners just don't give a shit...which is very strange for the location, WAY out of line....listed to the folks we sold it to, still.....It doesn't LOOK from the pix like Brookside Dr is doing so bad, yet.......Cousin's wedding was ~30 years ago....I was a little kid with my folks going 'home' for Xmas nearly every year, and so before the Pa. Turnpike was built, it was like a 12 hour trip, cut to 8 hours and then to less than that, last time there what with the interstates....I remember the famous fires on the Chayahoga River from the industry, I remember the Bethleham steel tower/smokestack that Mom used to blame for all the dirt/dust she swept off the steps in the house they lived in next to the Cathedral on Russian Hill.....and her complaints about the roaches in their first apt. in the DC region.....no wonder she was so picky as a housekeeper....drove me NUTZ!!

Well the neighborhood must be the near westside. Maybe this jogs your memory, it's the church from, The Deer Hunter. The steel mills are/were in an area called The Flats. It became a really big bar scene, however it's been scaled back.

That's the place, no question, and sure I heard of Flaming River hot rod/car place over the years, but never made the association with the river in Cleveland.....:harhar:

My cousin's grandfather founded/built that Cathedral....they had a parish house out back where he lived with his wife....they had two sons my uncle/cousin's father and another son, both very successful, but my cousin is the only grandchild.....:shocking: My folks both remember that Cathedral from them being way young...single digit age.....Dad from 05 and Mom from 03.......been a while, I know they lived on a very steep hill just down from the Cathedral, damn thing was near a 12-12 pitch, HELL in winter....but the bottom of the hill was taken out decades ago for some road?? industrial project?? Folks had a tiny farm ette in the back yard even had a cow....been a while.....

Cool to make the connection for you. That's a magnificent church. Flaming River is in Berea, OH, on the west side. I'm not sure if that's part of an area of Cleveland called, Ohio City. I heard Treemont in a video also. I don't know all the names. However much of the area has been gentrified. Maybe you also remember, West 25th St. and the Westside Market? Another movie was filmed around there years ago, A Christmas Story.

Do you remember how polluted Lake Erie was? We used to ferry out to the break wall and fish. However when you pulled in a tumor-ed catch, hmmm...? Now it's the Walleye fishing capitol. Maybe you remember, Euclid Beach Park?

The names W. 25th st, and Westside Mkt. ring a vague bell, certainly my cousin would know much better than me.....I not much on movies, so any reference to that is nil to me.....

:cool::D

It is the Tremont area. "St. Theodosius is located in the historic Tremont area of the City of Cleveland."

There's a big automotive presents in the area. Mr. Gasket was on West 130th St. Lakewood bell housings. Summit Racing is from Summit County where I lived and Jegs is in Columbus. Then the Ford Cleveland plant where the 351 was built.
I think TRW started in Cleveland as Thompson Products. My mom worked there. She would get free tickets to the air races. The last year they had them, mom and dad were driving to. A plane went over their car and moments later hit a house. That was the end of air races. They were moved to Reno, NV. Yeah the Reno air racers were originally in Cleveland. They kick off the week in Reno with a glider race from Reno to Cleveland every year. When I was small I used to see Goodyear Blimps all the time. Once I saw three flying in formation.

Some notable Clevelanders. Rockefeller, Paul Newman, Roger Penske.

When I was like 8-10 y/o or so, I remember the folks got a 'cruise ship' ride from Cleveland to Detroit, and how the water changed from around Cleveland to a nice clean lake, and pretty much stayed that way until we came back.....most of that trip I remember was not so much setting around on deck was that they left the door/hatch to the engine room open and I sat there watching that HUGE old engine turning over and watching the valves open/close and the prop shaft turning, thought that was neat has hell.....~60 years later, nuttin changed.....when I moved here, long about end of '98-99 sometime I had a 2 month job in the ship yard here in Jax.....they said no photos, and so I have none, but thought it was neat has hell looking at a 800' freighter in dry dock, pulled up on what looked to me as a wide scale RR track right outta the St. Johns river, I was doing electrical work, the interview with the 'lectric shop' foreman went well, he was 'shocked' I passed the exam so well, only thing I missed on was marine color codes....I quoted 3 phase civilian/land..... I remember working on a Crowley Ocean tug, pulling/cutting all the wiring for removal of the top of the boat, so as to pull the two RailRoad diesel engines out for replacement....I remember that freighter engine room, odd count at 5 or 7 cylinder engine.....

I remember my cousin and some of his buddies invented a fake language take off all their own, and so walking down the ethnic streets, they would get all these strange stares about the language no one recognized......

I don't remember anything about Cleveland air races, didn't know Rocky got his start from Cleveland, that family could buy the joint now, out of pocket change......

and Yup that Cathedral looks just like it did, no changes....back in the day all services were in 'church Slavonic' something the folks understood, even the one in DC where they went, I never understood a word, wasn't until High School that I met up with the kids from the Catholic school, and I found out they didn't understand anything either, as they were stuck with Latin.....I do remember our parish priest had met either lenin or stalin once....and when asked about it, he said 'cold as ice'.....describing a psychopath.....:club:
