vacuum, vacuum, what to do?

1979 C3 headlights. Like all of them mine are a leaky mess. Today I isolated them from the engine vacuum so I could tune the carb. Converting to electric is more than I want to do right now. What do you all think about installing a small 12 volt DC vacuum pump just for the headlight circuit? If I can find one that will do the job for under $100, I figure that and some new vacuum hoses and actuators should do the trick.
Ideas? Opinions?

DV8, I can't remember what you know about these systems, but I begin at the the basics....

there are one or two 'vacuum relays' in the system.....with 3 3/8 ID hoses to the stem of the relay.....so the main suck hose goes to the vac canister, to suck up or down.....

then there is a little control valve, that controls the internal valve of the vacuum relay....a little diaphram on the end and a small hose, that small hose has vacuum on it, it's to suck the relay to the position of DOWN, the default is NO SUCK UP......to the lights open to the night time position....

THAT is the basics of the control logic......

your largest issue is to find the hose leaks in the system....I can say my '72 had an ancient fractured gas tank shaped canister under the left fender, beside the brakes....it was bad news, tore it out and junked it for some years, so engine had to be running to operate the wiper door OR the lights....

so no Vacuum Storage'......

I suspect you have leaky actuators for the lights, not so much the canisters themselves, but the 'witches hat' witch is the witchy part on the actuator stem seal, under the water bellows...so the actuators will not suck so good....and so the lights look wimpy when called to attention....

My engine only make about 7-8 inches of vacuum at idle (nothing). 110 LSA. And its enough to lift my headlights. Just get them working correctly, more vacuum isn't going to help you. I got mine working by replacing the diaphragm seals

I have a vacuum pump from a BMW that I've yet to permanently install; but have tried - and it does work for lifting the lights... about the same speed as my currently, low-vacuum motor does.

this is the pump I ordered

I use a Hella pump, which cost me exactly € 75. Its similar to the one above. If your vacuum system is leaking it will keep switching on and off and they make enough noise to make you go crazy. Fix the headlights.

I looked at the vacuum pump as well- since running individual throttle bodies requires a lot of plumbing.

I went electric- way to easy and can be done on the cheap..I'm getting a bunch of brackets made for the Ford Probe motors...

A lot less mess-

Are you going to be selling those? If so, what kind of a cost are you looking at? I've got a set of the motors that work, but I haven't gotten around to making brackets.

X2 - I am interested too....

I went with the same solution Richard did. Best thing I ever did as far as the headlights are concerned.

Richard454 fabbed his originals out of post top brackets from Home Depot. I followed his directions but used Miata motors (very similar). They work great and eliminate all of the vacuum mess up front. There is no module necessary (like Firebird conversions), only power and either a Bosch 5 pole relay or an early C4 headlight switch (which fits right into any 68-77 and uses the your original headlight knob.
