I started to put my vapor canister back in my 77. The flexible line form the hard line to the canister was pretty bad. I noticed that one end had a plastic piece inside. It has a hole in it and I am guessing it is a restricter of some sort. My question, is it (the plastic thing) needed. Thanks, Jack

I chucked my canister a long time ago and just put a bolt in the rubber hose to the steel line on my 79. After I tighten my gas cap, I back it off 1/8-1/4 turn to let the pressure equalize as the bladder collapses. There is never any fuel smell in the garage and no fuel leaks from the tank. My car is never stored with a full tank of fuel, as I fuel on the way out and usually consume a minimum of 1/4 tank. I hope this helps. The plastic thing you mention might be a check valve.

I wouldn't think that any sort of restrictor would be needed, as the function of the vapor can is to store fuel vapors to prevent them from just venting to atmosphere. But who knows what these old cars have been thru, as this could have been a broken off piece from a PO trying to block it off or something.
There's a fuel/vapor separator in the fuel tank to keep the liquid fuel out, so that function happens at the tank, not at the vapor can.
I would clear the line out if you're going to reactivate it.
