I'm about to start body work, and I'm been looking for a wax and grease remover.
Want to Canadian Tires, asked for it and been directed to some engine grease remover. On the package it says not to leave the product too long on composite surfaces.... :skeptic:... I don't feel like putting this on fiberglass.
Could anyone point me a correct type of product?

auto zone sells it, so does Home depot or Lowes. You can buy it by the gallon for about 15$ . Mineral Spirits works too.

I'm sure the Canadian stores sell it too, $6 a bottle or $15 a gallon.... use it before, during and after sanding :)

Hey Denpo.
Any autobody supply store carries it. We order it by the 5 gallon drum at our shop...but you can get it in gallon containers too. Buy a pump up spray bottle from them too...that way you can apply the product and wipe it off with a clean rag. That's how we do it at work.

I buy all my stuff from autobody supply stores.

Thanks guys, I'll be looking for the stuff in a more specialized place.

NOTE: Autobody surface cleaners come in 2 types.
Solvent base and Water base. You will need both as
solvent base cleaners will not remove water base contaminates
and vise versa. The majority of the contaminates that you will
typically encounter will be water base. Clean with a water base
cleaner first and then follow with the solvent cleaner.

Be sure to allow for ample dry time before top coating.

And if your doing a lot of rubber bumper covers there is a (3rd) which
is an Anti-Static cleaner. We keep all 3 on hand in our paint department.

As mentioned already these can be bought at any bodyshop supply or auto
paint store like PPG, Dupoint, Sikkins, etc. I would avoid places like Auto Zone
JMHO

I've used Strip Kleen brand from AutoZone and it degreased pretty good.... now, what are you degreasing ???? Between primer and body filler applications you should not have much contamination other than maybe your sweat... and that should be easy to remove with water based degreaser....
Now, if you want to remove eighteen coats of wax off a panel then start with dish-soap and work your way down from there.... mineral spirits, wax and grease remover..... then sandpaper....

I have used the PPG brand wax and grease remover once, I remember it was really "good stuff"... $12 a QT if I remember correctly....wear gloves when you use these chemicals

Solvent base and Water base...
Good to know that
.... now, what are you degreasing ????
Well, the body is an original sun-baked paint, the door are 18 layers of crap, and the front clip is gelcoat/bare fiberglass. I bought the front already stripped from a part vendor parting out a cancelled restoration, it might have been this way for a long time.
Most of my attention go to the former that must have seen a lot of contaminants since stripped.

The front section is going to be a challenge as you don't know what kind of crap is on there.... bare fiberglass is like a sponge, hopefully there's no oil on there.... if it was me, I'd start with mineral spirits... wash it down good and then let it sit in the sun for a few hours....
The doors are easy because after you stripped the 18 layers of junk there won't be much grease left.... :1st:
