A friends son is wants to buy a 2000 Cavalier with a 2.2l engine. So, I go to look at it. Pop the hood and, first thing first, take a look at the oil. Hmmmm..........where is the dipstick? OK, maybe the dipstick is gone so, where is the tube that the dipstick goes into? I spent a loooong time looking for it and couldn't find anything. I've seen cats that didn't have a dipstick for the transmission but, can't believe there is no oil dipstick.

So I go online to see if I can find info on replacing the obviously lost dipstick and maybe some info on it's location. Lots of people with this engine looking for the same thing. Guess what, the dipstick is on the bottom of the fill cap! What will they think of next?

When I bought my first Toyota I couldn't figure out where many simple things were. Once I found them, I'd often reflect on how clever the change or difference was. I suppose that sometimes things do improve and not just get cheaper.

IS that a 2.2L with the overhead cam? Aluminum head on an iron block? Let your friend know that engine WILL not tolerate even a hint of overheating without popping the head gasket.

Most times I find myself in that situation, I'd like to find the engineer.... preferably in a place where his cries for help will go unheard and/or unheeded.

Ran into the same thing on my neighbor's 2.2L S-10. Finally had a friend walking by come look, never hurts to have a second set of eyes. He didn't find it either. Finally, his wife pulled the fill cap and both of us facepalmed.
