and back, last Saturday, a week ago....on the way to there she got 33 mpg on a tank of gas I filled up for her here in Jax/OP Florida....we have stickers that say 'UP TO 10%' ethanol.....they all the same too, all the stations....

on the way back she went by a Flying J off brand station there in Dothan...returning same day....and got

37 MPG on the return trip....her mom weighs only 95 lbs....

I figger the only reason for that is....the ethanol.....she didn't remember seeing any signs..only a guy would notice shit like that anyway...

but 10%+ fuel economy differential....

interesting...

Or one direction is mostly uphill, the other downhill?

Nope, flat as a pancake both directions....maybe a couple hills through Tallahassee area as it's the end of the Appalachians chain near the gulf...

like Linda, her mother is that nice polite southern layed back type woman....

just sets there and grins and rolls with the grandkids' punches....

I'm betting you are correct about the altitude difference. Florida is barely above sea level.
But, I have experienced a somewhat similar thing when towing my car trailer northward. I almost always get better mileage on my tankful I buy in Georgia versus the tank I bought in Florida, even though the highway is flatter in Florida. I always chalked it up to Georgia having 100% gasoline.

maybe she was driving 10% above the speed limit on the way to Alabama.... and maybe she was not in a hurry to get back home and only doing 65 on the way back ???
