Could my 82 have

ABS
airbag

as well as other stuff? Or to much hassle without installing a newer harness?

ABS plastic would be easy, the have it at Home Depot

Airbag, my wife doesn't like it when I call her that, but she's not impossible to install in my Corvette (just nearly so).... maybe your wife installs easier?

I crack myself up

As for antilock brakes and airbags, as long as the airbags are for the suspension; yeah, shouldn't be a problem (in fact, I think there's a company that makes retrofit ABS). As for airbag as in steering wheel - good heavens, why would you do that - those things hurt when they go off; and seriously, people die from them who would have survived if they didn't have an airbag....

That said, sure, a sensor behind the front bumper, and the steering wheel from a later vette with the airbag; it should be possible - though it's quite possible you'd be the first person to ever do so - so that is merely a guess on my part.

Airbag requires the windshield to be part of the a structural part of the birdcage. With stock butyl glue, the windshield will pop out with the bag.
With nowaday windshield glue, your windshield will crack at first birdcage flex.

ABS is a neat feature to have, but imagine the hazard of a malfunctioning or uncalibrated ABS. One little bug, and you kiss the wall.

IMHO the best security mod you could do in a C3 would be to strengthen the birdcage.

Well my 90 donor Vette only has a driversside. Airbags so that shouldn't affect the windshield. It also only seems to have 2 sensors by the firewall. Astor ABS it will all come from the 90 to along with its suspensions.

In 3 years with my '87 vette I only activated the ABS maybe twice, both times on ice in winter.....never did have it on any track.....messed with the '72 here in Florida a couple times.....autocross....on a abandoned air strip.....

:stirpot:

I dont think I would do the air bag... but thats just me.
A few people are doing ABS in classic cars over on Pro-touring.com... There is a good thread about it. A little more difficult than just swapping the computer stuff over

Not true... I just had a new windshield put in with the same glue used on new cars. I flex the hell out of my frame every time I pull into my driveway. No cracks here

Airbag NO

The deceleration profile is based on the structure of the car in an impact. C3's and C4's are very different in that respect.

ABS Yes

I think the early GM system is a stand alone that can be recalibrated.
