...know one of "those" guys? By those guys I mean that guy who read something somewhere and by God, that's the law, and if you don't do it that way you're a retard and your shit should blow up to teach you a lesson?
I'm trying desperately to avoid a pissing match with another member of a local club. It seems he contradicts me at every turn. The latest is another member posted on our local site that she put air in her tires (later car with TPM) and when she drives the computer dings and tells her the tires are over inflated. She's posting her tires show about 38psi on the DIC and she's afraid she'll have a blow out on the freeway.
So I post that 38 is a little high but I certainly wouldn't sweat it because I've personally run 40-45 during auto-x and open track days with no problems. Then "that guy" jumps on and says she should stick to the factory recommendations and it's dangerous to run outside that. OK, I'm with him on the stick to the factory recs for your day-to-day commuting. It's great for people who only check their tires when the electronic nanny chimes at them. But I also know from 1st hand experience, and 2nd hand experience of those with whom I've driven, that you can use air pressure to alter the way the car handles. And I know that strictly based on the safety perspective (that of a tire blowing out) that there is no problem doing so. We can talk about all the other things like altered tire wear, fuel economy and what have you all day long. But in a modern tire, nobody is in any danger running a little outside those recs.
Maybe I should be more specific in my posts though. There's no problem running outside the recommendations so long as you know you're doing so and why. But it isn't for the commuter who jumps in the car and never does anything unless there is a light or buzzer telling him/her to.
