You're complaining today music is shit?

Hate to sound SO old and ornery, but in fact, I started out with a heavy classical music family background, old BIL was head of recorded sound for the Library of Congress, Wash DC.....became head of music division just before he died.....used to sponsor and schedule the NPR sunday afternoon cencerts, as well as host many famous folks of the times for L/C events.....traveled to Europe quite often, first name basis with most of the music folks back in the 60's.....HOWEVER his PHD was earned studying Jazz/folk music from WAY down south, talking Louisiana Bayou type shit, going out in the fields recording what he could with the basic Vacuum Tube recording shit at the time, keep in mind my sis was 13 years older than me, I was 8 when she married him...age 21 or the math challenged.....;-)))

so the influence of music was rather heavy, and so I started into Jazz/Blues/early RR, and into home stereo, went into building band gear from early reverb chambers to tape loop echo crap, to speaker boxes and yes audio amps.....got into modifying audio amps late as the '80's.....

but like all hobbies, it dies off, and so, in that experience I too noted the total lack on interest in pop music beyond Hendrix....I used to have all 13 albums of his....I dunno if it was the newer music, or just my general decline of interest in the hobby....I suspect I have heard every lick possible on a guitar or band setup that is possible....

sold my records and turntables years ago, sold the fancy stereo maybe 2 years ago, just got tired of the hobby/music not listened to for 20 years or so.....call it burn out, if you will.....

I do tend to agree particularly with the "dance" genre. I listen to a lot of current pop music, but some of my favorites don't get played very much. What does get played every five minutes is a song that sounds pretty much like the last song, and the next song. There are still a few real musicians out there, but I'm afraid most of today's youth just gravitate to this bland pop like crack addicts.

I have Sirius in my DD and XM in the Vette. When I have to become retarded, I'll have to winnow down my expenses, satellite radio will be among the last things to cut. I live in the metropolitan LA area, and the AM and FM dials are almost fully populated with radio stations...problem, I don't like hardly any of them. I can't stand the music that is popular today..rap, hip hop,,or whatever and variants of it. Of course many of the stations are Mexican Spanish. I like mostly country and western and bluegrass, so there's a big selection on satellite radio. I think there's only one country and western station on commercial radio. As for the OP attached report about modern music's note structure becoming very simple, wonder what their analysis would say about some banjo music. Banjo players can produce some very complex, and rapidly played, sound patterns.

Ever hear of a band called 'The Seldome Scene'??? I used to watch them in the Red Fox Lounge....older brother of a gal I went to HS with used to own the joint in Bethesda Maryland.....so that band got popular enough in Bluegrass to afford their own joint called the Birchmere (sp?)....in Northern Va, her name was Jo Anne.....she skidded on her ass for a fair distance in a motor cycle wreck where he Fiance' was killed.....

John Duffy, Mike Aldridge, forget the rest of the group.....great times.....

Mike was on Dobro....I forget the Banjo player,.....he was great also....I remember John for his singing.....jeebus....early 70's....been a while....

I grew up with electronic music (the good one) and still listen to some pretty obscure synthetic music, old and recent.

The few popular bands I loved were The Cure, Depeche Mode and Eurythmics.
Beatles are still awesome.

UK still produce some decent pop music.
USA, Japan and Korea, eeek!

Why don't you guys post you favorive pop songs?
Youtube link contest! :mobeer:

OK, Denis, I'll take you up on your challenge. Couple from my favorite band, which you should know! ;)

I could go on, "Helicopters", "War On Drugs", "The Old Apartment", "Who Needs Sleep", "Sell, Sell, Sell", the list goes on. Probably the single most talented group in the last 20 years. Too bad they don't get the respect they deserve.
Going to see them at the Hard Rock tonight! :yahoo:

It's a very good band, song & guitar is not my type but those songs are just fine. "Will be waiting" my fav.

Here's some from me :

Rarely experimental electronic music would reach the chart, this song did.
Chris Cunningam video is disturbingly awesome, but you can just jump to 3:50 for the music to start. Weird as hell and still catchy.

Ok, you know those guys, but it's about popular song, the one you might know. Annie Lennox is so hot and cold at the same time.

Last for the road, you probably didn't heard about this one, the most underated pop band of the whole 80's

Just got back from "The Last Summer on Earth" tour. Missed the opening act (Cracker), Big Head Todd was OK, Blues Traveler was pretty good, but as usual, BNL was a blast. I still really like them. They're not musically as good without Steven, but they're just so much fun to watch.

denpo,
Salsa and Meringue are two types of music that come to mind when I read your posted article. It's a great sound but the music becomes very similar thru decades.

Remember these guys? I think they did the new Dragnet movie, Art Of Noise.

I grew up listening to the Stones, Zeplin, Rush.

My sons hate most of today's music. They are more impressed by Hard Rock and Metal.

Here is a mixture of my oldest boy's music.....His girlfriend is the singer..he is the lead guitar. The band is called Raimee...and unless your into the underground music scene or dedicated internet radio, you will not hear their music being played by any pop outlets.

They do this while in college...she graduated first in her class and he is right up there. It is definitely different than what I listen too...they write most of their music including the below.
