1958 MGA Coupe

ok thks, i think for this one i will just stay on the course i am on. thks bob

well, yes.... all the hours cleaning, wire brushing and priming would be wasted if you switch direction now....

if you plan on driving this car for a year or so and then sell it it probably doesn't matter anyways. I'm just saying, you put a lot of work in this car, probably a lot more than your photos show. I know I wouldn't want to sell it :D

Here is a thought on how to do your MGA

i like it!!!!

just a quick hour today sanding the inner fender area, every thing gets wiped down twice with a wax/degreaser formula before the primer

well spent 90 minutes fabricating a new repair piece and welding it in. heres the piece I trimmed off , i forgot to take a picture to begin with, a little more work is still needed back their to make the bended flange uniform.

IMG01703-20130421-1704_zpscb7722d8.jpg

another 90 mins or so fooling around with straightening out the rear tail area

IMG01709-20130422-2225_zps4644c078.jpg

tried a new way just for fun popping holes to plug weld

IMG01710-20130422-2225_zpsc4a9a798.jpg

IMG01711-20130422-2251_zps129a749d.jpg

not much left to do back here any more maybe another night or two

you would be surprised how very specifically located slide hammering can move an area out

IMG01713-20130424-2005_zps1eb8c2c3.jpg

uses a short spoon as backing to hammer dolly down high spots....this is very light hammer work

IMG01714-20130424-2021_zpsda2c32fa.jpg

its getting very straight back there....i am going to put a solid round stock or small square tube along that creased edge to give it some more rigidity.

IMG01715-20130424-2122_zpsb145a648.jpg

so i bought both 3/16 round stock and a 1/8 x 1/2" flat stock from HD about $4 each

the flat stock just fit better, when it was on the bent flange. i think this is when i tried it on the move verical side

IMG01717-20130424-2129_zps661bd022.jpg

thats about a clamp every 1" literally

IMG01720-20130425-1950_zpsbfe4358f.jpg

and some ugly welds....the prospect of lying flat on my back welding above just didnt enthrall me....so i had the worst positioniong ever on this weld job. next task will be grinding it some.....

well spent some time outside to day playing about 4 hrs..

you dont often see a car sideways in the garage but this got the business end out where the dust could go out side

IMG01723-20130428-1032_zps1c082a5d.jpg

while grinding the inner areas of the back tail, i repair this area..

IMG01726-20130428-1106_zps5c87a1ba.jpg

then move to the outside and grind the metal back down to shiny steel

IMG01727-20130428-1256_zpsfb78400d.jpg

and to mix my filler on i use these sheets, i love these things

IMG01728-20130428-1311_zpsd4433c7d.jpg

and some tools of the trade to get nice straight lines

IMG01731-20130428-1425_zpse8ad78bf.jpg

and my play time was all used up...

IMG01732-20130428-1454_zpse27eb6ab.jpg

that reminds me......so we are cleaning up at Mom and Dads (87 and 90) and I find and old hammer well sort of....no handle....and both claws broken off....

at least this car was one step better then that...I like to weld so this is fun to me

well spent an hour tonight doing some light sanding on the tail end over the body filler , removed the drip rails, and sanding the sheet metal around the boot lid

painted the filler area in gray primer and the metal with the self etch primer

IMG01733-20130430-1934_zps14e218a8.jpg

IMG01734-20130430-1952_zps324d8dd7.jpg

the tail area gets a spray of black primer has a guide coat for future sanding

IMG01735-20130430-2009_zps2a3993d9.jpg

and i sanded and primed one side of the sheet metal around the boot lid

well, I suppose that's okay - after all, we only got 12 states from the Brits, oh wait, google says we got 13, including Virginia. However, Virginia has always marched to her own tune :amused:

however, I'll draw a line if you start referring to fenders as wings - unless, of course, you put feathers on it.... then that'd be a whole 'nother bird

wings....damn i knew i forgot one.....I like the AF on the spanners....it stands for Across the Flats...the distance between flat sides of a bolt head

did i ever mention how much i hate sanding?

well working my way to the front about 2hrs of sanding tonight

IMG01740-20130502-2132_zps8b16a634.jpg

and then its time to at least finish the rear deck and rear window

IMG01741-20130502-2238_zpsfb905503.jpg

and finally some primer

IMG01742-20130502-2300_zps600020bf.jpg

more sanding today and priming the body....added some body filler where needed but didnt get to wrapped up in making it perfect that will be for a different day. today was a big day of accomplishment!

the next challenge

IMG01754-20130503-1600_zps264359c1.jpg

I like that your using guide coats. Should make for a great prep before paint.

Sent from my dumb 4g motorolly

thks, i will use guide coats for every where theres filler right on top of the first level of primer .... and then after the filler/primer/surfacer is used i will guide coat the entire car. its what maybe 3 cans of primer? i cant think of an easier way to see the trouble spotws

couple more hours today sanding things that need to be sanded

IMG01764-20130505-1143_zps3d867672.jpg

and then some sanding
