...Is there a particular reason that some people are putting those coils on their C5s?
ANSWER: Is there any reason GM could not make the motor in the car look honest and instead chose to hide it behind plastic panties?
I took the plastic covers off and wanted to get the top of the motor looking decent. The coils I had were original and filled with a white plastic sealant, not even black to match the case. The MSD units looked a lot better, was going to paint them a wrinkle red. Had I know that they would not work well I would not have bothered. Considered going to the GM truck coil like on the Burb with the heat sink, but the effort of redoing the harness and mounting again was just too much, so back to GM LS1 coils. The dealer (Connell Chev) gave me a fair price on a set.
Currently I have polished out the factory fuel rails. Later ones with the internal pulsator. They are stainless and came out fantastic. Mounted them on an LS7 intake, bought shortly injectors. And mounted an old style Ketch coil-mounting bracket on C5 R covers. Re routed the smog and wiring.
Looks great – will not run!
Boiled one of the MSD coils, popped a fuse, and killed the whole side. Drove the car on four cylinders. Best guess now is that the plugs are totally fowled and the LS-1 coils cannot light them off.
I have no idea what I am doing. And am having a blast doing it. Worst that will happen is that I will break something. But I have done that before.
PS I am following you lightening project on the shark! Very interesting. If it were not for the troubled economy, I can think of a dozen things to do. For a starter, can I get Doug Thorley to fab a set of headers in TI? Tie them into some C5 TI mufflers? How about sending some deep draw aluminum to the guy that stamps out the bumpers? And a lot of people are waiting for Tom’s magical aluminum diff case. That cast iron mounting for the steering is a bitch to get at. Been in there. Good luck with it.
