Available parts?!?

It wont, that's what i have my masters and im working on getting my phd. Eventually i will do what every other tool and die maker has done for the past 30 years - Get a higher paying job and wash my hands of this trade.

Sounds familiar, I spent most of the 60-70's as a part time while in school, then TV/Appliance shop manager, but by '80 the writing was on the wall, the end of fixing consumer electronics, so I jump ship into working for small security systems maker, Walk through metal detectors,...saw all sorts of interesting shit, worked in the development lab with engineers.....went into home remodeling when that was sold south.....been fixing houses since '85.....

like to see them import HOUSES that need fixing...:hissyfit::gurney:

just got finished with what I think is the last Rodeo on that, major overhaul.....age 69, too old for this shit anymore....

:crap:

That is correct, Tom has his parts made to order. Will he restock, he is the only one who can answer that. I've been telling guys for years to buy the 10-17 x 30 spiders if they ever have a thought of a super 10 or 12 bolt. What will probably happen is the 9" conversion market will increase, even though those are running as high or higher in cost then a current 12 bolt.

Kind of like what happened with the new steering box gears that corvette steering was supplying to all the vendors. When Tom Riena died the supply of new gears to vendors stopped, since I now own that stock I can tell you I haven't sold any to vendors.

Very true on the T&D trade too. Finding a good toolmaker is hard today, you can find CNC programmers but finding the guys that know how to run manual machines is getting harder to find. Those jobs pay between $25- $30 an hour around here, probably with 10+ hr's OT.

CNC guys can make 90-100k in the right shop for someone who can program any job. We had a great CNC programmer that left CT for UT and 100k a year job, which I think works out pretty well in UT. The button pusher jobs pay about $18hr.

the guys who actually work in skilled trades have been screwed over the last 20 or so years . i am glad the o.p shows interest in light weight parts etc in contrast to how can i make 1000 h.p for $55.00 like most do. and asking about a dana rear compared to others . he is on the right track. and if he has the talent and equipment to do the stuff he says that will be great. sometimes all it takes is fresh blood to make things happen. and when i drive my car i see the ricers just stare a thumping v8 just is flat cool compare to a sewing machine powered import with a fart can.:smash:

I like the idea of CF parts, but not necessarily the look. A little CF here and there peaking through as an accent I think would be badass, but to blatantly have whole sections of the car CF I think would be too close to the ricer and 'hellaflush' (not tuner) crowd. Even the tuner crowd has stayed away from all out CF parts because of how it is received nowadays. Another concern I've heard is UV coatings tend to be expensive and I've seen older CF hoods and whatnot without proper UV coatings that have been in the sun for a bit. They look like trash.

With that said, I wouldn't mind some CF parts for my '75 since I'm updating to some new tech anyway, but I'd most likely paint it body color and the inner panels exposed CF (like the hood). I wouldn't mind some CF interior pieces as well. However, I probably couldn't afford it anyway.

Don't get me wrong guys i absolutely love being a toolmaker and considering i became a master toolmaker at the age of 31, i must have a decent amount of skill. But im not going to see any of the big money come my way by cranking handles, those days were long gone before I was even born.

I also know that H.P. isn't free. I put 5 different motors in my 67 beetle before i got it to do 100 mph with out blowing up. But that was mostly trial and error on my part. Now i have the power of the internet at my fingertips and i can ask stupid questions without trying out some stupid idea on my car first (lets not talk about the giant 1-1/4" off-center hole in my hood right now or the half rebuilt steering box on my dining room table)

As far as making custom parts, i can make just about anything i can think of. The only limitation is time. If i make a part just for myself then im going to work on it after i take care of work, family, school, bills (this will take forever to get done). But, if i find a group of people that want a certain part that isn't made anymore and their willing to pay for it. I can go to my boss and say "hey this many people want this part and i can make it in this many hours" He'll say "OK do it" and instantly the custom part goes into the work category and it gets done. BTW i found a company that makes a 60 irs at the end of HRM, i don't know if it will work for the C3 or not. My guess is it probably will.

I think my CF phase is starting to pass now, i ordered some of that CF vynal available on ebay, it looks super nice, but I don't think its the right look for my car. Although, i have been tossing around the idea of getting some loose weave carbon fiber and placing LED fabric under it so i can change my car color at night. I get all giggly when i think about a cop trying to chase down a vette that changes from red to blue to green to purple to yellow to orange. What would the cop say on the radio? "I'm chasing a red, no yellow, no purple, no orange, oh f*** it just let him go"

you know your absolutely right, what was I thinking posting to a guy who types and types and never says much of anything other than to tell us all the things he could do if his boss will only let him....

How many times have we been convinced that we had a great idea only to later realize it was not all THAT great??? That entire carbon fiber look is in my opinion one of those crappy ideas.... Real C.F. on a lightweight race-car is one thing, a UV bleached yellowed hood on street driven car is another story....once it's been in the sun for a while CF looks really bad....
Then again: to each his own.... There are plenty folks who like that look and they're spending big dollars on that stuff....
