Where is the maximum oil fill line for a BBC? Not just on the dipstick but in physically in the engine? Bottom of the crank counterbalance?

Should be below the counterbalance, you don't want the counterweights frothing up the oil. Look at where a windage tray would sit below the crank, the oil will be below this level. Our resident big block racers should have a good handle on this with the cornering and braking loads sloshing the oil around in the pan making a windage tray and oil level that much more important. I wish I had a more precise answer for you.

Been looking around and I have an original BBC oil pan with baffles. So, the book says fill for a BBC is 5qts. I am pretty sure I put 6qt in but it reads way over full on the dipstick. The dipstick is a generic aftermarket stick so, who knows. I am going to replace it with a repro of the original dipstick and tube, then see what it reads (and adjust the fill to that).

A GM dipstick and tube confirms its over filled. Drained and refilled, it's a quart over,. Whoops.

Good to know. That should help on both performance and longevity.
