Two reasons combined : shockloads and rpm...use a car correct and below 5000 and you should not need one.

The PO put a Lakewood on Ol' Red in 1971- right after he found out the factory diaphram (sp?) clutch sticks to the floor at 8000 RPM. But that was right after GM bought him a L-88 to replace the L-89 that spun a main bearing.
