Tom's Aluminum Differential Case

I can not claim to have ever seen one but I have been told GM had an aluminum diff for the Grand Sport race cars. I can`t imagine him investing so very much money in a differential for a 30 year old car...I can see his 12 bolt conversion as it (sort of) uses existing 12 bolt posi cases but an aluminum diff for a C-2/C-3?? seems like a poor investment for a very limited audience.

Well I for one would be interested in the case. There may not be a lot of us but there are a few of us out there. Between aluminum brakes, carbon fiber drive shafts, an aluminum bow tie block, as well as a few other parts on my '69; adding an alum case would be just a part of the game for many of us. Now can we get titanium gears to go inside?

Any target pricing?

As for the grand sport cases, there was one on EBay not too long ago, recall $5000. Based on the photos I have seen, it is not a direct bolt in.

George

Titanium gears wouldn't be a big payoff as far as I know. What about titanium con rods, pins, and valves? This would make a big payoff with performance I believe.

From what I've read, titanium has really increased in price lately. Although titanium is a very common substance in the earth's crust, it's difficult to process to the pure element. Its in great demand. Boeing Aircraft, for example, bought out, the entire world production for one year for it's new 787. It's as strong as steel and 1/2 the weight. In addition to being difficult to produce to the pure element, it's difficult to machine. It tends to "gum" up production tools it they run at normal speed. The CNN machines have to run a little slower with titanium (or so I've heard).
