What would you do if the vette was not your hobby ?

Big G, you sayin' the motors in that plane above are ALL electric??

not the prop engine....I had the sound down....so couldn't hear anything...

at any rate, that thing got some tired batteries....

even for the flight control surfaces...

:eek::thumbs:

at any rate, it's a really cool model...and the guy gets a super ACE award for flying ability....freeking kids and their video games.....

much less the drones in sandland....that a old friend helped design for NavAir....

:eek:

Got to watching your second film there, and so thought of all the tech advances from my day, with a few cables flying some plane around in a circle, with cable controls making elevation control.....

and maybe 5% of the guys had like a 2 tube transmitter and lucky to transmit enough input to land the thing in one piece....

phreaking dit it ALL world has really changed that shit.....

and like I said, the buddy with the drones, and flying them from Kansas.....

:eek::eek::thumbs::twitch:

The first video is the electric, the Extra 300. LiPo batteries....probably about 3 lbs. worth. Plane says twin C-50...drawing about 1,700 watts EACH. There are 2 electronic speed controllers, are probably 100 amp units.:twitch:

HE got a BATTERY to put out 1700 watts EACH, for some 5 minits flying time, and they weigh only 3 lbs?? 300 lbs I believe .....

gotta be nukey powered.....no way a mere BATTERY got that kind of git up and GO....NFW.....power my cphone for a damn decade .....

Wanna bet?...Look up Litiium Polymer batteries...probably the most dense watt/lb. of any battery. My cell battery is very small, 1700 ma. at 9 volts. Granted, it takes a lot of cells to generate that power. I'll post up some batteries. Welcome to the 21st century...
Most big electric planes use several of these in a series/parallel configuration.

This is the FlightPower Pro50 5000mAh 6S 22.5V LiPo Battery.

That is the max, absolutly. Saw it before.

You need to be a biljonaire to fly one of those though. The price for one of those engines alone is sky high. They do make one nice sound though.

Anyway for even small planes, it's difficult here in Europe to fly, besides the cost factor. There is simply not enough open space to do some real flying.
The Brussels airport is only about 80 kms away, and Boeings are flying at the higher altitudes. Below that we've got the fighter planes of NATO/Belgium coming from Kleine Brogel and doing excercises on the NATO practice base of Helchteren.
Nice to see them doing it however (and a lot of problems with sound related to that). In the town of my wife, they once flew off the rooster that was on top of the church, go figure. That thing must have flown about 30 m above the ground. (never happened again, so i assume the guy got grounded for a pretty long time)

Back in the 60's there was a outfit called Modifications Unlimited in Kensington Maryland, just off Connecticut ave, outside Wash Dc. and so it was the only repair shop for many imports....things almost unheard of between NYC and Miami.....little unknown badges, like Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche, Mazarati, you know, those little obscure names back when.....

Well in that shop, they had this huge engine, I was told it was a Allison Aircraft engine from the war....I remember it having some green parts on it, and some weird plumbing I knew nothing about....still don't....

at one time I tried to get into avionics but no go, needed .mil training.....

My second hobby is Radio-controlled aircraft. Of course, the fast ones...:devil:

Sweet. Me too on the planes, Heli's. Everyone is going to the electric stuff, personally if it can't burn you or cut you I'm not interested. Ha! I have a pylon racer with a nelson engine, clocked at 208 MPH. Yes I hide behind the straw bails!

Ham radio, Satellite communications. Moon bounce, data stuff. Still have 4 repeaters running in Birmingham area, UHF, VHF. Cell phones and internet kinda ruined ham radio. This naturally spills over into RC aircraft. God help me I think I still have 13 planes, 3 very large scale, smoke systems, all the goodies. 5 helicopters. Plus ya gotta have a trailer to tote all this crap all over the place. Finally got the first new vette so the wife could join in some fun, started a business and all the hobbies took a back seat except the car stuff. Then this spilled over into getting an old vette to redo. I say all that to say this, I too could be retired in the Caribbean with all the $ I have spent on some of this stuff. By far, the older vette, Hot Rod Power Tour, car shows, etc. Best fun of all.

Do a search on Lithium Polymer battery fires.....crazy fires! Houses and cars have been burned to the ground over improper charge/discharging. Very regimented procedures and high-tech chargers required. I don't have any planes as fast as yours...but I bet mine land slower...One of my old-school pattern planes is a 1987 vintage Career-60 (remember the anhedral tail craze back in the mid-'80's?) sporting a Rossi 61 on the pipe, with pneumatic retracts. It will do 100+, but slow down nicely.
