I'm in the poop again

Probably the most significant change in street racing since Deps "good old days" is the advent of the electric starter. Just think Dep, no more hand cranking.:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I wonder if it's YOUR T that broke my Dad's wrist......:hissyfit::surrender:

Geez Dep, didn't think you would ever post a pic of yourself again! A few people had fun with it last time as I recall.

LOL...I remember that on CF. I was going under the name RoboDep and was the "self-appointed moderator" over there. LOL...I had a blast with that. :smash:

Yep, You seemed to have mellowed in your old age, Dep Maybe Larry and Marck need to give you Deputy moderator status over here at VetteMod. :club:  That will get you back on track:D

BTW, I bumped into DB when I was down at the Dam Car show at lake of the Ozarks last month. I told him you said to say hi, and all is forgiven. :stirpot:
Haha..just kiddin

And there is the hook. When you HAVE gobs of horsepower, it's human nature to want to USE it..

I got to admit. Street racing is some of the most exciting shit i've ever done. When i bought my GN, i was out at least 2 nights a week for about a 5 year period. That was in the heydays when Coxfax ave was just loaded with hotrods Friday and Saturday nights.

Exactly right Turtle. I have no doubt all of us who were around back then did some street racing and had a blast. More fun than going to the strip and a lot less expensive. Of course, if we said that at CF, we'd be banned instantly. And a mod has already appeaered over there and warned against talking about it. But street racing has become a lost art. At least, the style of racing we did.

Well not totally lost. Back in the 60's we frequented a place down along the North St. Louis River front called Hall Street. It was a long, straight as an arrow, street where trucking companies had their depots. Got my first ticket down there in 68 in my 67 BB vert. That BB Vette was hot stuff back then. :bounce: Think it cost me $60 and 2 points.:hissyfit: The traffic was lined up for 1/4 mile waiting their turn to launch down the street. We used to have guys set up along Hall street with walkie-talkie's on the lookout for cops. Hell I remember one guy rolled a rail off a trailer and fired it up for a run. Yep those were the good old days.

BTW, they are still at it today, albeit a little more tame.

And the police keep a better eye on Hall St. these days. Don't you just love the "closed to non commercial traffic between xxxxx hours" signs?

I already had a mild run-in with one of the mods at CF. He didn't single me out, but he warned against mentioning street racing. It's certainly different there than here. While we don't endorse street racing here either, we can certainly discuss it and the good ol' days. I don't want and I doubt mod status will ever be offered to me here at VetteMod. I'm not on here enough to be useful and I have too short a temper to be able to take the job. Have you noticed how many young kids are on CF lately? I did see where Lars is still posting. I was kinda shocked to see that. I thought he had left there permanently. Other than Gene, I don't see many of the old crew posting there. Maybe it's time for Jughead to do another "old timers check in here" thread. BTW...I get the 10 year emblem this year at CF. If I don't get banned first :smash:

EYE have not spotted anything by Lars in long time there, but damn few of the threads interest me, talked out, on the stock resto crap anyway....

every once in a while I back channel with someone on something and even email then recommend coming here for the engineering know how....

shame the joint went so far down hill that they don't even seem to care...all about the addy bux....

the hobby aspect long gone....

Dep, i can tell you why i am building a bigger motor, and why i keep making them bigger and bigger. It's not for street racing (which i am guilty of) it's not for bragging rights or to say i have more HP than who ever, heck i dont even know how much this will put out,but it should be more than 500,i hope.

It's for the challenge of the build, I like the challenge of making all these after market parts fit together and play well together. And if you have been following my post, they don't always play well together.
And the bragging right of, I built it,i did not order out of a magazine or off the net somewhere.

Thats why i do it.

:crutches: I nowhere near your HP level there, but same philosophy about my build....only I keep a eye out for junkyard parts....why? I enjoy the walk in the park, with parts to look at....

Emblem of a cock.

sucker.

I been there since '99? not long after a hint from the old alt.autos.corvette site alert some time ago...jeez even I found that joint in '95....

been a while....only thing I resent is other guys grabbing my handle on other sites/ISP's....

Understood...and makes perfect sense. But please test it on the track. You know...Mr Murphy ;)

The amount of horsepower in an engine is never the issue. The issue is that space between the ears.

An 18 year old kid was racing his stock pickup on the street. While looking over his shoulder to see how far he was in front of the other driver, he t-boned my brother's car in the drivers side door at 100 MPH. The kid lived. My brother didn't. His boys were 12 and 9.

Stories like this are all too common and I wish I didn't have one to tell.

Build all the horsepower you and your car can handle and then be smart about using it.

The best instruction for life can be summed up like this: Don't Be Stupid.

Well said DC3. And sorry for your loss.

Capitol, 75-80, Budds Creek.....used to watch him run.....'

You remember a fellow named Joe Perzan, used to work at Call Carl downtown DC, auto trans specialist....he ran a '60 Bonneville Wagon, all 5500 lbs of it, into the 12's as I recall....headers so long they went to back of the door, damn near, before the collector....talk about a BASS note....

Well my post about Strickler was carefully and completely ignored. I guess in this day of stroker motors and big cubes in little mice, a 302 just doesn't get it. Eveyone wants "tork". But tork doesn't win races. Oh well.

You've been harping on this for 10 years. Why would you limit yourself to 302 ci? It would be a self imposed and unnecessary limitation to achieving your goal of going fast, i would assume.

If i can spin a 415 at 7700 rpm why would i go with at 302?

Since torque is a component of hp tq*rpm = hp so torque is required to produce hp and you need to integrate the power under the curve. Calculus crap.

He turned 8200 rpm with "stock" valve springs? something stinks.

Tork is something that "feels good" and is mainly something that street drivers are in search of. You NEVER hear competition drivers worried about how much tork they can get. The 302 is the absolute KING of RPM...next to a NASCAR motor. Why would I even THINK about building a small block if it couldn't reach and RUN AT at least 8000 RPM? The whole reason to BUILD a small block is to get maximum RPM. If I want cubic inches and a big block, I
would BUILD a big block. Which I am :)
As to the Old Reliable turning 8200 RPM with stock valve springs, the Z-28 motors were first and foremeost RACE CARS. Even the ones you bought at the dealerships had NO power windows or AC. That wasn't available as an option. What was "stock" on them was pretty much racing parts to the rest of the auto world. At the strip Z-28s were regularly reaching 8000 RPM.
