made some progress today - Karmann Ghia

How did you do that?
Made a cover, a plastic cage or something to not overspray everything in the garage?

Great job by the way K!

Thanks :)

I use painters drop cloth on the walls, I just tape it in place.... I also keep the floor wet and hat helps a lot with dust and also prevents the overspray from sticking to the floor.

With these HVLP guns you really don't get much overspray, you can see the plastic foil stayed almost clean except where I adjusted the gun....

Thanks :)

I have a DeVilbiss Finishline gun, nothing too fancy... $200 .... It's a great gun for the money. Use the slowest activator you can get away with, I use SPI clear and it mixes 1:1 with activator. You can mix their medium and slow activator to get the speed you want ... Other than that just practice, painting is easy with these base/clearcoat systems , even I can do it ....

My '79 was the first car I ever painted ... Got three quotes from local shops then bought a compressor and a book LOL

Nex time you're over bring your gun and supplies (gm bright red) and stay at least a week, I got work for you LOL

Nice! Do you neighbors bitch? I helped a buddy paint a car in his garage and some clown called the police. The cops showed up and told us they had to make an "appearance" and left.

My neighbors are ok, I live in a normal neighborhood where it's ok to work on cars ... There are quiet a few neighborhoods around here where people bitch if you change your oil in your driveway .... Then again, if you have asshole neighbors they bitch about everything ....
Hey Marck, get the car prepped for paint and have a generous quantity of cold beer handy .... Should only take a day or two :)

This was just a nornal lower middle class neighborhood. I think somebody smelled the paint fumes and went nuts. Somebody also turned him in for parking a car next to his garage (off the driveway). Probably the same person.

I am careful with wind and overspray though.... fumes are one thing, that is gone by the time the cops get there.... if there is overspray on a neighbor's car then that could get expensive..... if you use (like me) very slow hardener and add some extra reducer fir extra "flow" that stuff stays sticky for a while, overspray -as little as there is- can travel a great distance and still stick....

on the other hand: some people are simply assholes, especially if you have a homeowner association .... got a letter once because I left my trashcan at the curb all day .... well, what did they expect? trash is collected in the morning, am I expected to drive home during my lunch break to get my trashcan ?? :tth::bonkers:

here's the transaxle with new nose cone and new seals and new swingaxle boots..... I scraped about 5lbs of dirt and gear oil crud off this thing.... like most vendors I applied a nice coat of black enamel :)

Now that the car is painted I decided to cut up the dashboard once again .... No better time than now ....

I don't want to use a dashpad and there's no speaker hole cover available .... So I decided to get rid of that hole and smoothen out the dash ....

16 ga steel .... Just in case .... For extra strength LOL .... Nah, it's just what I had laying around ....

Fits quiet nicely .... Thanks Dremel ;)

Just a very little filler was needed

Final spot putty and then primer and paint next ....

OK , got the dash done again .... Center speaker hole is gone, I like this smooth and 'classic' look :)

And the transaxle is back where it belongs ....

:twitch: putain, c'est magnifique.

merci beaucoup :)

je suis d'accord: c'est F@&$)ing beautiful ..... :smash::smash:

turned out ok for a garage paintjob, I sprayed two good coats of clear, then wetsanded it again with 600 grit..... then sprayed another two coats clear..... that SPI clear is by far the best I've used so far.
